resort in Scotland -- if he does go to Turnberry on the 19th, as some reports indicate -- might simply be his response to not having any home here in the US that he's comfortable with at the moment.
Even if he and Melania are looking at estates in Florida since they can't live permanently at Mar-a-Lago, they don't have one yet.
And since Turnberry has been losing a lot of money, about $10 million a year, spending time there allows Trump to plug the resort on free media.

(76,072 posts)I believe he is trying to avoid extradition, if he is charged with treason because conviction carries the death penalty.
Can't imagine dump being charged with treason...

(52,858 posts)Treason is two very specific things in the US, and Trump didn't do either.
The first is declaring war on the United States. Unleashing the Proud Boys, not sending Sidney Powell on a three-month-long vacation to Ulan Baator, and allowing the virus to ravage the country, while reprehensible and probably criminal, are not "declaring war on the United States."
The other is "providing aid and comfort to the enemy." Russia is more of a frenemy than anything, and Trump isn't known to have provided aid and comfort to North Korea. So, that's out.
Besides, I suspect that by the time we deal with the tax evasion, bribery and money laundering charges he was already looking at, and add in the 30 crimes the phone call to the Georgia SoS enabled, we'll be looking at the same effective life sentences that Ponzi operator Bernie Madoff and tax evader Winston Shrout got.

(15,325 posts)This involves Trump's financing of Scottish properties, thru his shady NY Trust, via the Crown, & winds it's way back to Sen Warner's ILLICIT CASH ACT he slipped into the NDAA just 4 days before it was a done deal.
And since it's a Trump Trust in New York, USA, well he's not getting out of this investigation.
Between Scotland & NYAG (with the power of the ILLICIT CASH ACT in her hands) I'd say Donald J Trump is due for a reckoning

(58,785 posts)than not. He has other places to go in the U.S., and as Wellstone mentions a resort on St. Martin. Frankly, the only reason I'm coming up with for his wanting to go to beautiful Scotland in January would be as a jump-off for somewhere else. Need more information.

(58,785 posts)Unless our hounds are really snapping at his heels, I don't think heading straight for Putin's protection would be a good look for someone who still believes he could regain the presidency. And at very least intends to milk his trumpists to the last dollar, cheer, and vindictive strike.
He has many nice options, unfortunately, and at least initially would not have to consider only "shit-hole" nations that wouldn't extradite to us. Of course, we've never known what Putin has on him. It's not quite insanely beyond the realm of rational speculation that Putin could summon him for his own purposes.

LONDON (AP) Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Monday a new national lockdown for England until at least mid-February to combat a fast-spreading new variant of the coronavirus, even as Britain ramped up its vaccination program by becoming the first nation to start using the shot developed by Oxford University and drugmaker AstraZeneca. Johnson said people must stay at home again, as they were ordered to do so in the first wave of the pandemic in March, this time because the new virus variant was spreading in a frustrating and alarming way. As I speak to you tonight, our hospitals are under more pressure from COVID than at any time since the start of the pandemic, he said.
Under the new rules, which are set to come into effect as soon as possible, primary and secondary schools and colleges will be closed for face to face learning except for the children of key workers. University students will not be returning until at least mid-February. All nonessential shops and personal care services like hairdressers will be closed, and restaurants can only operate takeout services. As of Monday, there were 26,626 COVID patients in hospitals in England, an increase of more than 30% from a week ago. That is 40% above the highest level of the first wave in the spring.
The U.K. has seen an alarming surge in coronavirus cases in recent weeks as public health officials struggle to control the spread of a new variant of COVID-19 that is more contagious than previous variants. Authorities have recorded more than 50,000 new infections a day since passing that milestone for the first time on Dec. 29. On Monday, they reported 407 virus-related deaths to push the confirmed death toll total to 75,431, one of the worst in Europe. The U.K.s chief medical officers warned that without further action, there is a material risk of the National Health Service in several areas being overwhelmed over the next 21 days.
Hours earlier, Scottish leader Nicola Sturgeon also imposed a lockdown in her nation until the end of January. Beginning Tuesday, people in Scotland will be required to stay at home except for essential reasons, to help ease the pressure on hospitals and intensive care units, Sturgeon said. Under the new rules, people can go out for exercise but can only meet one person from another household. Schools will remain closed until February, except for children of key workers and those in social care. I am more concerned about the situation we face now than I have been at any time since March last year, Sturgeon said in Edinburgh.
