I live in deep red rural Pennsylvania where wearing a mask is treated as some kind of eccentric hobby. I regard all local businesses as unsafe, both because there are invariably unmasked customers, and also because store employees often wear their masks around their chins. I wear N95 masks, sanitize, and take my business into Pittsburgh whenever possible.
Today just about put me over the edge, when I asked a clerk at the post office to please cover his nose and his response was, Yeah, whatever, as he pulled his mask down to take a swig of coffee. You can bet I went right home and filled out the USPS survey, explicitly saying I didnt feel safe in that post office.
Im just so damn tired of feeling threatened.

(82,849 posts)All these constraints on their freedom that they're actively ignoring and subverting just means that they'll stay in place longer. This whole ridiculous nontroversy is being fomented and abetted at the highest levels by willfully uninformed and misinformed knuckleheads solely to score political points. Over 350,000 Americans are dead because of it, and their stubborn insistence on their own selfish ways hasn't been dented in the least.

(70,238 posts)frankly, my complaints to ups and usps have resulted in bullshit w my deliveries.
but my maskhole usps regular carrier has disappeared. he had been suspended 3 times, so i am assuming he is gone.
i've had it, too. when i have to go into a store and they do do it right, i cant help expressing my gratitude.

(2,636 posts)Went to local grocery store today. Most people have been compliant, and the stores repeat their masks required policy on the loudspeakers. I've never confronted a mask-less person directly, except to cough and say that I was still positive but felt so much better, and I didn't think I was contagious. Dude with dick nose masked up right quick.
Today, an older gentleman, masked and gloved, stood at his post by the door. I thanked him for being there to enforce their policy, and expressed my gratitude they took it seriously.
Hit it from both sides.

(8,445 posts)I mean, it must be, because masks are on clearance at my local Walmart for $1 a pack for the reusable ones, and hand sanitizer is 50 cents a bottle. Oh, and disinfectant wipes are cheap now too.
Note: The masks are not great. They're the thin ones - not very effective.
Seriously, though, I'm sorry you have to go through this. I hardly ever see anyone in a store without a mask these days where I am. I contacted more than a couple of store managers and corporate offices a few months ago, and I also contacted the health department. Of course there are always some who don't think that don't seem to comprehend the part about covering their nose.

(32,095 posts)I'm already seeing them where I live. Every time I go out there is inevitably at least one person, or a couple of the over 70 age group strutting around the grocery store without a mask. It's only going to get worse.
The ones with the exposed noses drive me nuts, too. I avoid them like the plague as much as I do the maskholes. It's worse when its the employees. I complain to the management, too. It usually doesn't help.

(26,116 posts)That was my last session in person. Tried to get a Telehealth session, but *only* PTs can do that, not the assistants, so there's a 3 week wait time for Physical Therapy Telehealth now. My doctor's Telehealth wait time is well into February!
"Are your health needs being met?" Hardly and barely, not sure about safely either. And I have to go in person for an in-person evaluation this week for someone to look in my throat etc.

(42,376 posts)for that same reason. The chains require masks, the mom & pop business mostly don't. I did use a local shoe repair shop that had "masks required" signs all over the front door.

(3,148 posts)I'm in Northern Virginia and work in multiple areas. So I know the feeling when you have to go into a deep red area and they refuse to mask up. Slot of them wear it only over their mouth likes that's doing any good.

(45,540 posts)The irony is if everyone had masked up early like Asian countries, we could have opened up the lockdowns long ago. Their restaurants, bars, sports, events, etc. opened up months ago because they got the pandemic under control.

(11,688 posts)I am fortunate. I have seen only a handful of thousands in my area NOT wearing masks. I live in a Progressive area and like you I wear an N95 my son gave me last Father's Day.
All I can say it is a God Send. I had worn the standard masks and they fog your glasses, fall off your nose and are of less than assuring to prevent spread of Covid. My N95 mask has replaceable filters, gel form-fitting and you never have to actually touch the mask only the straps. I could not have made it sanely though this calamity without the fact it DOES NOT FOG MY GLASSES too!

(8,826 posts)My post office in rural WNC last week. Every employee was properly masked as is the Ingles Groceries I visit about once every 3 weeks. This is Trump country, and most all businesses comply. Customers mostly do, always a mouth breather though. Usually fat and vulnerable.
A woman at the post office spent 30 minutes holding up the line packing a box, smacking her gums non stop, with no mask, no nothing. As she left and passed myself and another vet in front of me, both wearing veteran ball caps with respective branch emblems, she said thank you for your service. I could not hold back, yea we were inconvenienced with jingles, bullets, chemical warfare to protect you. And here you are willing to kill us after all that because you cant be inconvenienced to wear a damn mask.
All the staff and masked folks in line, clapped as she left flipping me off. Maybe they were clapping in suppprt of my comment, not her flipping me off🤫

(1,341 posts)We are actually having some luck with not going into public places at all now, since no one here wears a mask either, including all grocery store personnel. We started using Walmart's curbside pickup service for groceries and other things. We started out not including meat, produce, or wine, which we bought in a grocery store. We have since added those things. Some sacrifice since their wine options are limited and some high school kid who probably eats like trump is picking out our produce ("is this supposed to be firm, or do I want the soft ones?" , but we haven't been into a public place for 2 weeks now and hope to continue this way. My covid anxiety was reaching a bad level and this at least helps my knotted stomach and panic times.

(16,829 posts)If this happens, I'm sure its a really tiny percentage. Nevertheless, she was using it as her reason not to get vaccinated. She wears a mask, she just thinks the vaccine is worthless.
Maggiemayhem
(811 posts)After the second vaccine you are 90-95 % protected but it is not clear how long you can be a spreader. Masks and distancing are still protocol after the vaccine and we are no where close to any sort of vaccine herd immunity. Everyone who does not have a medical reason, should get the vaccine. We dont have nearly the amount of vaccine needed in my part of the Eastern US. We need a national policy instead of leaving it up to each state.

(2,636 posts)Takes two weeks after the vaccine for it to be effective. And that's with the two dose vaccine.
Get vaccinated, and mask up in public through until Spring. Then, be cautious.

(40 posts)Locally, I see covidiots without a mask frequently and although the mandatory face mask signs are up everywhere, it is most definitely not enforced. Its a Trump county and they dont dare try to enforce it! The cops certainly wont do it.
But, go to the nearby city 30 minutes away, I dont see anyone not wearing one and it seems to be enforced. Fucking plague rats. Wear a goddamn mask. This is why I mostly stay home.

(23,337 posts)I talked to a customer of mine on the phone yesterday...he and I were venting about anti-maskers. He is just getting through Covid himself as is his family. He caught it from his 8th grade daughter who was infected by her anti-mask teacher. The teacher infected all 23 of her students. Yeah...I know. I would sue if that were my kid. Deep red part on Montana...Anyway, my customer told me it was horrible. He's been suffering symptoms for over a month. Unfortunately, before he knew he was sick, he had infected all his employees and their families were also infected. His wife is a hospital physician and of course, she caught it too. What a friggin' mess and all preventable.

(1,018 posts)Yes, we exist. Im beginning to think the anti-masker behavior has accelerated due to Trumps loss. In my county seat the restaurants are all open to dine-in despite the mandate for closure. The last one finally gave in to the peer pressure.
The county to the south Board of Supervisors switched from 3-2 pro mask/ follow protocols, to 2-3 in last election to anti-mask/open all businesses. Todays meeting is full of people shoulder to shoulder without masks on.
I do believe they are protesting the POTUS election but would never admit it.

(111,358 posts)except in the supermarket, but this is the big city. Dicknoses and chin diapers aren't objectionable behind plexiglass. If there wasn't any at your post office, good for you for complaining.
It's rough in rural areas, where they're the last to get amenities and familiarity is confused with safety. That's why this virus is hitting rural counties so much harder.
