(12,046 posts)...or else getting 10 GOP to vote for cloture? Manchin has said he won't vote to kill the filibuster... I think this will depend on Dems adding a couple more senators to their majority in 22.
When we hoped to win even more Senate seats, that was potentially within our grasp. That's when all the buzz about this possibility was strongest. It would take ending the filibuster, and if even one Democrat votes to keep it (and Manchin is probably not the only one) it can't be done during this session.

(18,359 posts)I would actually offer Toomey the Secretary of Commerce position to get the extra Senate vote. Don't like it, but it is the only way I could figure to get a clear majority.
Maybe the DOJ can come through with Ron Johnson. He was hip deep in the Russian disinformation campaign. Also I have a special loathing when he tied Hunter to child porn.

(13,370 posts)They had a vibrant pharmaceutical business, until the island's tax exemption status ended in 2000 and big pharma pulled out of the island. Then when islanders on Vieques complained about a Navy jet dropping a bomb on a security guards shed, with the security guard in it, Bush closed the Roosevelt Roads Naval Base crushing the islands east coast economy...a death blow.
Then Trump came on the island to salvage the Del Mar Golf Course Country Club, and lost $33 million declaring bankruptcy, but Trump finagled the bankruptcy in such a way that he just stuck the PR government with the bill. PR sued Trump and lost. So if you're ever wondering why he would insult Puerto Ricans tossing paper towels at them and more, the bankruptcy/lawsuit is a big part of that story.
And now they lose the island's crown jewel, the Arecibo Telescope. Time we give them a break after so many decades of abuse.

(68,952 posts). . . . bipartisan opposition to statehood.
The filibuster can be overcome. But the (very) different issues surrounding DC and Puerto Rico are likely hurdles too high to scale.

(54,448 posts)removing the filibuster and even if it was gone, Manchin (and probably Sinema and others) opposes DC statehood, is likely opposed to PR statehòod, plus PR has never voted to become a state.
