Not sure wtf he was talking about.
He briefly spoke at the coup rally.

(7,400 posts)definitely a buzzword to rile the crowd. Intentionally placed and somewhat out of context IMO. It was like he wanted to find a place in his rambling to just throw that one in there.

(11,744 posts)Conservatives are monarchists (without the idea of hereditary monarchy). They have never abandoned the ideas of Edmund Burke, Joseph de Maistre, and other conservative philosophers who began in the 17th and 18th centuries when monarchs were being challenged and toppled by popular movements. They believe that people are inherently unequal and that they (Rich, White, mainly Protestant, men) are chosen by divine right, to rule over us lesser people.
My wife has been watching a lot of shows related to the monarchies in England, France, and Spain during the Tudor reign, the period of the War of the Roses, etc... She asked why they were always killing each other and reigning only 1 to 7 years. The answer, if you believe that you are destined by god to rule, then you will do anything, including killing your own family, to fulfill that ordainment. Power mixed with religious fervor is a recipe for disaster.
This is the same ideology. There is the same religious fervor (though Trump is not religious others in the movement are and he exploits it). Conservatives, in my opinion, are typically destined for this kind of extremism because their ideas are not driven by reason, testing, and self examination. They are driven by emotion and religiosity.

(118,356 posts)although the practice continued rarely elsewhere in the United Kingdom afterwards.
I know of no instances in the US: dueling survived for a while in some parts of this country, but that is not really the same as trial-by-combat, which (among other aspect) had originally been under English common law a method for resolving property disputes, before the English judges gradually replaced it by the jury method
Whatever sporadic contraindications might be found in the UK, the plain text of our Seventh Amendment ("In suits at common law .. the right of trial by jury shall be preserved" ) shows that trial-by-combat has for some time no longer been considered part of the common law
