It makes me throw up in my mouth when I hear it. It has been so co-opted by the right wing it’s a confederate song to me. Once I was in a small hardware store with my son and it came on and he blurted out, ”mom you hate this song, it’s the traitor song”. All these white guys spun around and glared at me. I grabbed my sons hand and left quickly.

First time I ever heard it was at a fish fry at an American Legion on karaoke night shortly after the 2016 election. It was the first time we'd stopped into this particular hall. We were going to have a quick bite and then go grocery shopping. It was crowded and I recall being surprised at how quickly our food came.

When the guy started singing this song with the karaoke everyone at every table and every seat at the bar stopped eating. They stood up and put their hands or hats over their hearts like it was the star spangled banner.

My husband and I and one other couple were the only ones that stayed in our seats and kept eating. I could see the other couple looking around incredulously just as we were. It was one of the most creepy, other worldly experiences I've ever had.
