when I and others make similar points on discussion forums open to those of all political stripes, the ReThug supporters come back with, "Yeah, well at least they're not burning down cities, are they?"

It's because the so-called "oppression" they face is nothing compared to minorities. But don't expect most ReThugs to understand that.
