Capitol Police firings imminent after 'attempted coup,' top appropriator warns

With control of both chambers and the White House, Democrats could mandate changes among the Capitol Police force.

The top House appropriator charged with funding the Capitol Police vowed Wednesday to investigate the law enforcement response to the violent mob that overtook the Capitol building and alluded to firings to come among the force.

Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) told reporters after the rioting had subsided that "there were some strategic mistakes from the very beginning."

“I think it’s pretty clear that there’s going to be a number of people who are going to be without employment very, very soon," Ryan said, "because this is an embarrassment — both on behalf of the mob and the president, and the insurrection and the attempted coup, but also the lack of professional planning and dealing with what we knew was going to occur."
...
Ryan noted video footage that went viral of Capitol Police officers allowing rioters past fencing in order to access the building. “I have no idea why that would be permissible,” he said. “That’s unacceptable. … We’ll be looking at all of that.”

No contingents of FBI, no homeland security no federal marshals. Zero presence of force on the square, NO backup forces any where.

This was rigged to leave the Capital a few Congress vulnerable. We are lucky the mob did not have 50 heavily armed members inside the building as we be talking about dead senators and congress people tonight,

Watching the ease of these terrorists storming the building was bone-chilling. Trump and his enablers knew perfectly well what they were doing. It was an attempted coup.

They are all domestic terrorists, seditionists, traitors and should be dealt with as such.

A huge number of the miscreants, both in and out of uniform, will be identifiable and subject to prosecution. Find a couple of new Representatives looking to make a name for themselves, and lower the boom.

As Teddy Lewis said in Body Heat: "any time you try a decent crime, you got fifty ways you're gonna fuck up. If you think of twenty-five of them, then you're a genius... and you ain't no genius." In the photos and videos I saw today, genius was in short supply.

I was appalled at the inaction of the Capital Police! There was no firing of tear gas canisters, no rubber bullets fired! All I saw were cops gently pushing back on the surging crowd. If this had been BLM protesters the cops would be cracking skulls, firing tear gas and rubber bullets everywhere! Seriously WTF? And cops stood by as the loons broke windows and smashed in doors to get into the Capital. Hell they even let them walk right past them! I have never seen such restrained cops in all my life! Anyone with a brain knows they had to be in cahoots with the protesters! There is no other explanation. It was outrageous to watch! It seemed like they only had 50 cops there! Where was the National Guard? Where were the other security agencies? This needs to be thoroughly investigated!

Some officers could have been in cahoots, some were obviously sympathetic and some were just cowards. But some appeared to be completely overwhelmed. There was no way one or two or three officers could have held back the hundreds of people mobbing certain points. And, watching this, I got the impression that none of the officers had any authorization to use lethal force under this circumstance. They seemed to be trying to hold people back but when they kept pushing, they just backed up and in some instances, ran away while calling for assistance. I think they weren't authorized to shoot anyone unless they were in immediate fear of death or serious injury.

and the DoJ, except that apparently there is one. Something like 62 were arrested out of 100s of the worst lawbreakers. Someone on O'Donnell said the crowd attacking the Capitol was about 3000.

People in the know have commented on the striking silence from the various involved law enforcement agencies after the events, stating that normally agencies like the CapPol, FBI, DHS, etc, etc, would hold a press conference with their spokespeople lined up to speak. We've all watched those. Instead, silence this afternoon and tonight.

Given this debacle, the promises of plans and people to carry them out that never happened, I'm wondering if some agencies are refusing to stand with another(s) because they're investigating it or them. And what comes next. Norm Ornstein is very concerned but believes the rule of law is holding and wll get us through the next 14 days. No one seems to believe the "lackeys" in the cabinet, as one person very deliberately called them, will invoke the 25th.

The various federal law enforcement agencies often coordinate and work together - especially on certain events like the Inauguration and State of the Union Address.

And different agencies often back each other up - for example, the National Guard or DOJ or Homeland Security could have backed up the Capitol Police today if their assistance had been requested.

But they're managed separately operate within different hierarchies in different branches of government.

I can't remember who was suggesting the DoJ, what, might have had some influence? It could have been unofficial, part of the hot mess around Trump; the comment was in the context of speculating about the lack of preparation for what happened. But considering everything, it's nice to hear the DoJ would have no legal authority, even tenuous.

That was my comment on IG when I 1st saw the video of the police smiling for photos with the miscreants. Same for those who walked away while the thugs were breaking through barricades and storming the building.
They deserve to lose their jobs because they aren't ready for prime time. We can't have terrorists easily entering our government buildings, putting in jeopardy the lives of our elected officials. I am so livid. They basically opened the door for the criminals.

Right before the woman was shot and killed. There was an interview with a guy on CNN who said how it all happened. If you watch the video of the shooting, you will see the police force starting to walk down the stairs right before the crowd tried to get into the House Chamber.

They're trained to control large, peaceful crowds and individual or small group attacks. They probably were never trained and were obviously completely unprepared to handle a mob like this. Just watch the clips where 3 or 4 officers are trying to push back hundreds of surging people. And it seems they were not allowed to use their weapons - most of them were trying to use nightsticks as barriers and then they just backed up or gave up.

A complete mess.
