A woman, who is yet to be identified, died after being shot in the chest on the Capitol grounds, DC police confirmed to CNN. More information on the shooting was not immediately available and a police spokesperson said additional details will come later. DC Police Chief Robert Contee said three other people died from medical emergencies during the riot.

"One adult female and two adult males appear to have suffered from separate medical emergencies, which resulted in their deaths. Any loss of life in the District is tragic and our thoughts are with anyone impacted by their loss," Contee said at a news conference Wednesday night.

Multiple officers have been injured with at least one transported to the hospital, multiple sources tell CNN.

Some other stories regarding the 3 non-shooting victims suggested 2 that were apparently cardiac emergencies and one that was someone falling off the side of the Capitol building (could have been one of the ones climbing/standing on the scaffolding).

I do not disagree that there were serious failures. I could write a lessons learned paper on just what I have seen in the news. There was indeed ample warning of the gathering crowd and their potential to disrupt proceedings proceedings. Perhaps Capitol Police felt the same?)

However if there is no suggestion to actually use the military, then referring to the DOD budget is meaningless.

that they REALLY "swept" that place. The Capitol is a HUGE complex and that is bad when you had hundreds and hundreds swarming around in there with backpacks going from floor to floor and room to room. Who knows what the hell they could have "planted" in there.

I remember my first time going in there - I think back in the late '80s, and if you wanted to go sit in either chamber gallery, you had to have a "pass" from your member of Congress (House and/or Senate) and then you couldn't bring anything with you to sit up there (items had to be checked and stored). I'm sure the screening is way more extensive.

From ancillary articles and social media remarks from various members of congress, most have or are moving into a "fury" stage so I expect all kinds of heads are going to be rolling.

I'm getting really sick of the hyperbole running rampant. Once again the focus is drifting away from Trump and his republican enablers via the "who had the best quippy line". The blame is being shifted to the Police. They have a part in this but were not the cause of this.

The government did not fall. And yes, security needs to be updated badly.

Also, the Capitol police did NOT remove the gates and invite the insurrectionists inside (regarding the very narrow view of the tiktok video making the rounds on Twitter and elsewhere). Mistakes were made that need to be addressed, they are investigating.
