(8,867 posts)Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Thursday called for President Trumps immediate removal from office, either by his Cabinet or through impeachment, describing the violence at the Capitol on Wednesday as an insurrection against the United States, incited by the president. -- Washington Post

(12,217 posts)Perhaps it could be interpreted to mean "a majority of all the Cabinet that there are." It can't be a fixed number, because Cabinet positions come and go. Not often, but even once could "break" the statute.

I guess hiding in a bunker while an armed mob roams the halls above you has a chastening effect on a person. Let's see if the change of heart is permanent or temporary.

That being said, they might go along with impeachment just to save their backsides in the next elections.
Or not. Who the hell knows anymore.

(11,178 posts)Barring him from ever again holding office or trust under the United States of America...his worthless, self-serving ample ass is unfit for any office, any trust, any dignity for the remainder of his shameful life.
Madam Speaker, since the Republican Senate has previously indicated that witnesses are not needed at a trial, please pass these articles and proceed immediately to a vote in the Senate to remove. To the GOP Senators THINKING about again giving him a pass...you should all resign immediately rather than cast such a vote.
This should be the easiest vote a Senator could ever have - shall the sedition encouraging, petulant criminal POTUS be allowed to finish his term AND continue to menace the political body of the nation? Or shall he be thrown out on his ass today?
Gee...let me think on that...

(106,207 posts)as it says, what he did on the 6th was "consistent with his prior efforts to subvert and obstruct the certification of the results...[which] include, but are not limited to, a phone call on January 2..."
That shows a consistent pattern of lawbreaking, not just a reckless speech yesterday.
Retrograde
(11,419 posts)asking her to start impeachment proceedings based on that call and previous attempts by Trump to undermine Michigan's votes by inviting selected state lawmakers to the White House. I think there's a lot of evidence to support a pattern of subversion and obstructions.

(17,738 posts)the 25th amendment. I know this is off subject and will probably be deleted. I live in MO about 70 miles away from where the stealth bombers are kept. I know what they sound like because they fly over the KC Chiefs stadium at the start of the season and they almost always fly right over my neighborhood. About an hour ago we heard one fly over. There of course is no game today. What is up.

(23,336 posts)It would go nowhere, for the reasons you just illustrated - and what's worse, it wouldn't play in Peoria.
Impeaching Needy Amin just 13 days before he's due to leave anyway, would smack of spite and vindictiveness to anyone who's not a staunch Democrat.
Yes - he's earned impeachment like no other president has (with the possible exception of Dubya).
But it's just not feasible - and would probably only erode support for Biden, just as he needs it most.
Traildogbob
(13,018 posts)Be good with impeachment after he is out. That is still able to be done, after we get senate. It would mean he could no longer run for any office, plus he would lose his pension and health care, as would Melonoma. They have taken enough of our tax money, especially being he never pays taxes.

(28,836 posts)I'm not sure why almost no one else can see this.
We apparently learned exactly nothing from last time. It's the only time in Trump's entire administration that he received a noticeable bump upward. The Senate is simply not going to convict, which leaves us exactly where we were last time.
It would accomplish nothing and could very well cut into Biden's support, in particular, and Democratic support, in general.

Don the Con is and has always been a clear and present danger to these United States. Anyone who supports him is complicit and/or actively involved in the attempt to overthrow the U.S. Government. Either way, they all deserve to be removed from office and prosecuted for sedition/treason/vandalism/etc.

(10,484 posts)either in Congress it in the M$M. Both must present, unequivocally, what he did and why it is not only disgraceful, but an impeachable offense. Dems are not as good at message discipline as Rs, and the M$M has both-siders disease, so I worry impeachment won't accomplish what we hope it will.
So depressing that even now, after this armed insurgency he incited and to a degree may even have orchestrated, Don Trumpleone still has loads of support in Congress.
I'd love to be proven wrong.

(1,648 posts)First, Trump cannot grant pardons in cases of impeachment, so if he tries to issue any for anyone who had a role in this stunt they may not be valid. That would have to be sorted out by the courts. My guess is that if he doesnt try to pardon himself and his cronies out of this mess the articles of impeachment wont likely go very far, at least for the time being.
Second, the only consequential punishment impeachment carries with it (other than removal) is that it can prevent someone from ever holding public office again. Trump will be gone in 12 days. So Congress could just sit on any impeachment articles, hold their hearings, and just not act on it unless he tries to pardon anyone or run for office again. Nothing would rally the public more to the Democrats side than Trump trying to let anyone involved in this off the hook. Even a number of Republicans may be willing to pile on (see the last paragraph).
Make no mistake, there WILL be hearings over the breach of the Capitol and everyone who had a hand in it, including the President. Whether these come in the form of an impeachment inquiry or from special committees remains to be seen. One brilliant thing it does do is make any plans Republicans had for going after some of the cabinet choices or Hunter look stupid, petty and completely tone-deaf. They start this congressional term now in the minority with a weaker hand than they had even just after theyd lost the Georgia seats. Right out of the gate theyre on defense, giving Biden some critical breathing room early in his term.
As for running again, Trump is now radioactive to the Republican Party and this gives them the perfect out for them to try and run as far away as they can from him. The best we can hope for is that he threatens to make a third-party run in 24, in which case there would probably be more Republicans willing to impeach and convict than Democrats.
