A man seen gleefully stealing what looks to be House Speaker Nancy Pelosis podium in a now infamous photo from Wednesdays Capitol riot has been identified by the Bradenton Herald as Adam Johnson, a father of five. He traveled from Parrish, Florida, to D.C. to join a group of protesters who later stormed the Capitol to oppose a peaceful transfer of presidential power. The 36-year-old was quickly identified from a photo that went viral where hes seen grinning at the camera. He could face felony charges for destruction of government property. The mob was eventually brought under control by police forces, but not before four people died and dozens were arrested.

(58,785 posts)fear and unexamined vindictiveness that characterize so many conservatives. It's a starting point for not just empathy and compassion, but understanding. What would proportional punishments be? How would different circumstances affect them? Should they be the same for all or does ideology make a difference?
It should the same for all, regardless of ideology, treason is treason, no matter who or what their political beliefs are.
What frightens me the most, and I'm a retired Marine, so not much frightens me, is that the next wanna be strong man will be much more smarter than Pissolini and come to power and finish the job Pissolini and his band of enabling thugs started.
We have to remain ever vigilant and somehow put in place a new system for vetting Pres. candidates.
Not sure if this answers your questions.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)Btw, I was sleepy and am fuzzy about it, but one of the afternoon political shows mentioned the concerns of intelligence officials that 74 million people who voted for Trump need to be examined, somehow?, for anti-democracy radicalization. I assume for what I call being "trumpzis," activist versions.
dware
(18,058 posts)would actually take up arms against the US Govt?
There's no doubt a hard core cadre of Pissolini supporters would take up arms, but just how many are willing to give up their domestic lives, their actual lives? Their livlihoods, etc?
I suspect that when the shooting actually started, the vast majority of these wanna be soldiers would give lip service, but would be cowering in their homes.
Against a well trained force, like the FBI's HRT, the various Fed. SWAT teams, State Police SWAT, etc, these domestic terrorists would not last very long.

(58,785 posts)to give their leader absolute power and looked the other way while brown shirts beat people on the street, etc.
As for what they'd give up, authoritarian follower types are not exactly our most insightful. Most of the potential cost is completely unsuspected. They're the responsible, moral people restoring what is good and right.
to give their leader absolute power and looked the other way while brown shirts beat people on the street, etc
And this is why we need a complete overhaul of the vetting of Pres/Vice Pres. candidates to prevent this ever happening again, along with remaining forever vigilant.

(1,167 posts)It is a very simple process. We don't have a "pre-crime" division. Everyone has a right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. What that means differs from person to person.
The big question, and most may not realize how bad the consequence is for "trespassing in the capitol building," is that all can now be charged with murder after the deaths of 4 people as well as a Capitol Police Officer. Who thought a trespassing charge, we will ignore treason and sedation from the conversation, trespassing at the capitol should now carry a murder charge.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)is that many more people exhibit signs typical of very bad actors than ever bad-act. So profiling turns up a forest of pretty nasty people whose biggest crimes are speeding and kicking the cat.
But national security monitoring of internet and other messaging and activities, which of course is done, nevertheless identifies people and networks that have at least become active in ways that raise visibility among millions more doing the same. He was pointing out that the anti-democracy radicalization (to some degree from very mild to strong) of nearly 80 million people means a really big population those charged with protecting our national security need to worry about.
That last, "big question," is an interesting point. Certainly anyone fighting in a group that resulted in death might. I've been thinking in more general terms that insurance does not cover criminal acts, so that most of those who are prosecuted are going to find themselves in a world of legal and financial problems they didn't anticipate. Defending against murder or manslaughter charges, whoo!

(8,997 posts)Felony Murder Doctrine
Definition from Nolos Plain-English Law Dictionary
A rule that allows a killing that occurs in the course of a dangerous felony, even an accidental death, to be charged against the felon as first-degree murder. A felon can be guilty of murder during the course of the dangerous felony even if the felon is not the killer, as might happen when a robber kills a clerk -- the driver of the getaway car, as well as the robber, may be charged with first-degree murder. The rule extends to unusual circumstances, such as the killing of one of two bank robbers by a bank security officer (the surviving robber may be charged with murder).

Johnson lives in Parrish with his wife and their five children. He is a stay-at-home father, who makes and sells furniture, while his wife is a doctor in Palmetto.
Neither Johnson or his wife have responded to phone calls seeking comment.
Wonder if she'll see the impact of her husband's poor choices in her practice? Wonder if she shares his beliefs.
