BTW The attacks on the capitol would probably not have happened if the GOP members of the
house hadn't wanted their useless protest votes about the election.

(77,324 posts).... of Trump sending the Pro Trump mob down PA to attack the US Capitol. This will not be like
the 1st impeachment where McConnell and the GOP senators did not allow any evidence or witnesses
to come forward because they knew they would have to vote to convict Trump but this time they
can't hid "it." Trump told the mob to go and attack the US Capitol and then told them that he
"loved them."

HariSeldon
(541 posts)I believe the standard reading of the section of the Constitution on presidential pardon power is that the president may not pardon impeachments, not that he/she loses the power to pardon because of impeachment. However, a pending or ongoing impeachment trial before the Senate might just convince Trump to fly straight for two weeks.

(2,673 posts)I heard Thom Hartmann talking about the timing of impeachment and when it is actually considered done. Depending on the timing, I think he said something about Trump's inability to then pardon anyone. Does that make sense? Are there other ramifications of being impeached other than the fact that he won't like it?

summer_in_TX
(4,168 posts)apparently there's an option to add to it that he cannot run for office again.
I imagine it only takes effect if the Senate convicts and removes him.
StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)The articles of impeachment don't reference that. If the Senate convicts and removes him, they can then take a vote to permanently bar him from future office.

(14,868 posts)1- if it could be done rapidly.. it stops the pardons.
2- same if- it removes him from the nuclear codes.
3- If done correctly it makes him ineligible to run again, if he somehow survives the next few years.
And less directly.. he becomes the one that was impeached and removed. That goes in the history books, and it also stains those who have willingly associated themselves with him. And that ain't nothing. I'd argue it also makes the illegitimacy of his occupancy of the whitehouse official. Maybe adds a little leverage in undoing some of the crap he has done to try and wreck the country.

(1,585 posts)The House can vote by simple majority to impeach.
The Senate must have a hearing and vote. No delays.
In order to convict the Senate must do so by two thirds which is currently 66 votes, not 67.
The pardon clause means that a pardon does not exempt one from being impeached and convicted.

Time is of the essence. We need to get the impeachment articles to the Senate while the images of Trump's filthy putsch attempt are still fresh in the public's mind.
