I think their insane plan was to do exactly as you suggest and then temporarily install Pompeo as President to somehow later resign to pave the way for DJT to retake the presidency. Pompeo would have had to have installed DJT as his vice-president somehow though and I see no clear constitutional path for him to do that. Then again what happened yesterday was extraconstitutional treason so..? Horrifying stuff. The 1924 Munich Beer Hall Putsch comes to mind here.
