And they put her in that position because she is so spectacular. There are only a few sour grapers that won't admit it.

(42,862 posts)The underlying message, of course, is based on the false premise that Nancy isn't all that special and that "anybody else would be just as good as Nancy". (And we all know that's not true.)

(5,067 posts)I think she's trying to say all democrats would do the right thing. Not those who run as democrats in elections only to refuse to become democrats.....ever. Gosh golly, who would ever do that?
The way I see it, she's defeated her own backhanded insult.
NurseJackie
(42,862 posts)But it's clear to me that the message is one that marginalizes with the undertone of "she only did what anyone else would do, so why make such a big deal about it?" As if it was as rote and as routine as remembering to turn off the lights and lock the door when one leaves the house.
I know what I'm talking about. My memory is still good. These gray hairs and wrinkles of mine indicate wisdom, not dementia.

Pelosi is masterful at her job because she knows more than what is just the right thing to do, but also how to play it, which is not such a simple thing.
Ive been reading a few reviews just now about the Queens gambit, so pardon the analogy, but though good players know opening theory, it is the great players who define it (and get the move named after them). In watching her function over the past few years, I dont think too many leaders are in her league.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told colleagues in a letter Friday that she had spoken to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Mark A. Milley, about keeping an unstable president from accessing nuclear codes.
Her letter came shortly after Trump tweeted that he would not attend the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden on Jan. 20, breaking with a long-standing tradition of outgoing presidents attending the swearing-in ceremony of their successors.
Democrats are increasingly eyeing a second impeachment of Trump in the wake of Wednesdays violent takeover of the Capitol by pro-Trump rioters if Vice President Pence and Trumps Cabinet officials do not remove him from office under the 25th Amendment.

(15,526 posts)... under Biden, although I have no fear of him being irresponsible.
Future Presidents can't have so much almost-unchecked power to destroy. They get to choose their Secretary of Defense too, who could be equally crazy.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_football
-----
Before the order can be processed by the military, the president must be positively identified using a special code issued on a plastic card, nicknamed the "biscuit".[7] The United States has a two-man rule in place at nuclear launch facilities, and while only the president can order the release of nuclear weapons, the order must be verified by the secretary of defense to be an authentic order given by the president (there is a hierarchy of succession in the event that the president is killed in an attack). This verification process deals solely with verifying that the order came from the actual president. The secretary of defense has no veto power and must comply with the president's order.[7] Once all the codes have been verified, the military would issue attack orders to the proper units. These orders are given and then re-verified for authenticity. It is argued that the president has almost sole authority to initiate a nuclear attack since the secretary of defense is required to verify the order, but cannot veto it.[8][9][10]

(1,910 posts)It was explained that every step of the way, military and civilian lawyers sit next to each person in the chain. Any order must be determined to be legal and to defend the US from imminent threat.
Its a myth that a President can simply order a strike. Several people in the chain could determine it was illegal all along the way.
Buckeye_Democrat
(15,526 posts)That's not what I've read.
https://www.armscontrol.org/act/2018-01/features/strengthening-checks-presidential-nuclear-launch-authority
Not to mention that the Trump administration made changes to allow him to make "first strike" decisions -- the authority to launch missiles without evidence of a prior attack on us.
