Man with foot up on desk in Pelosi's office at Capitol arrested
Images apparently showing Richard Barnett of Arkansas in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office became emblematic of the mayhem that tore across the U.S. Capitol.

WASHINGTON A man photographed casually sitting with his foot on a desk in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office at the U.S. Capitol while a pro-Trump mob rampaged the halls of Congress was arrested Friday, law enforcement officials said.
Richard Barnett, 60, of Gravette, Arkansas, was taken into custody in his home state on charges of entering and remaining on restricted grounds, violent entry and theft of public property, according to a Department of Justice official. Further details were not immediately available.
Apparent images of Barnett were splashed across social media as the deadly mayhem unfolded in the nation's capital on Wednesday, just as Democratic and Republican lawmakers convened to count the Electoral College votes. Members of Congress condemned the violence and rioting, which was preceded by a rally led by President Donald Trump who told his supporters to swarm the Capitol in defiance of the election results.
A New York Times reporter tweeted that he spoke with Barnett after his stunt in Pelosi's office. In a video, he boasts that he took a personalized envelope, but insisted he didn't steal it.

How about charging him with more serious crimes???

That's why I think they should not be arresting them until Pendejo45 is out of office.
Not give him a chance to pardon anyone associated with Wednesday activities.

(26,016 posts)Nobody to pardon him. Does he want to set them free when he will have to face the charges, too? They will be able to testify against him if they are pardoned.
aggiesal
(10,804 posts)But if he resigns or gets impeached prior to Biden taking over, Pense will pardon him.
So nobody will be able to testify for him.
The theory is that Pendejo45 will pardon is family, friends and rioters, then resign and allow
Pense to become pResident for 2 days and have Pense pardon Pendejo45.
Pelosi and the House are trying to pass legislation that will shore up a loop hole in the
Pardon Power, which states something like, you can not pardon people who are complicit
in the same crime committed by the sitting President. It reeks of coverup at that point.
wnylib
(26,016 posts)That seems like a reason to challenge the legality of the pardons. I'm aware of the scenario of Trump giving out pardons and then being pardoned by Pence. But does Pence even want the job under current circumstances? He is refusing to act on the 25th and probably couldn't now with the cabinet dropping out of sight like a magic act.
George Conway tweeted that he thinks there are 67 votes for a conviction in the Senate. If so, would Pence still not want the position for a few days? If it went straight to Pelosi, Trump would not be pardoned, although he might pardon everyone else while the impeachment is in progress.
I heard a discussion on NPR with a legal expert (sorry, didn't get the name) who said any pardons Trump issues now, especially for the insurrectionists, might be successfully challenged because of 1) Trump's instability, and 2) suspicion of coverup for himself. Same with Trump trying to pardon himself.
Would Pence dare to pardon Trump after Wednesday's coup attempt? Talk about coverup. The whole nation except Trump's cult would be outraged and Pence's future would be down the drain. Might get himself investigated and charged.
What an effin' mess. And what a shame that Trump survived covid.

(55,141 posts)most of those so far would be applicable to local burglary.
Where's crossing state lines, conspiracy, destruction of property, and something applicable to federal buildings and disrupting Congress?
This fiasco cost taxpayers and insurers if there are any lots of money. It probably costs at least $75k per hour to hold Congress in session - utilities, personnel other than salaried, security, overhead.
This was an expensive stunt that these law-abiding police-supporting lawbreakers pulled.

A resident of Alabama was also charged in connection with the pipe bomb found on the south side of the Capitol building. Eleven Molotov cocktails and military-style weapon were found in his pickup truck, officials said.

They do not know if this guy was one in the group who caused the death of the cop or what else he did. Lots more charges will come for many initially arrested on charges like he was today.
