Richard Barnett (the clown who broke into Speaker Pelosi's office) arrested in Arkansas

Geoff Bennett @GeoffRBennett

NEWS: Richard Barnett, who was seen sitting at a desk in Speaker Pelosi’s office, has been arrested in Arkansas and charged with entering and remaining on restricting grounds, violent entry, and theft of public property -- NBC's Pete Williams reports.

Man with foot up on desk in Pelosi's office at Capitol arrested
Images apparently showing Richard Barnett of Arkansas in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office became emblematic of the mayhem that tore across the U.S. Capitol.

Jan. 8, 2021, 1:35 PM EST

By Pete Williams and Erik Ortiz

WASHINGTON — A man photographed casually sitting with his foot on a desk in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office at the U.S. Capitol while a pro-Trump mob rampaged the halls of Congress was arrested Friday, law enforcement officials said.

Richard Barnett, 60, of Gravette, Arkansas, was taken into custody in his home state on charges of entering and remaining on restricted grounds, violent entry and theft of public property, according to a Department of Justice official. Further details were not immediately available.

Apparent images of Barnett were splashed across social media as the deadly mayhem unfolded in the nation's capital on Wednesday, just as Democratic and Republican lawmakers convened to count the Electoral College votes. Members of Congress condemned the violence and rioting, which was preceded by a rally led by President Donald Trump who told his supporters to swarm the Capitol in defiance of the election results.

A New York Times reporter tweeted that he spoke with Barnett after his stunt in Pelosi's office. In a video, he boasts that he took a personalized envelope, but insisted he didn't steal it.

But if he resigns or gets impeached prior to Biden taking over, Pense will pardon him.
So nobody will be able to testify for him.

The theory is that Pendejo45 will pardon is family, friends and rioters, then resign and allow
Pense to become pResident for 2 days and have Pense pardon Pendejo45.

Pelosi and the House are trying to pass legislation that will shore up a loop hole in the
Pardon Power, which states something like, you can not pardon people who are complicit
in the same crime committed by the sitting President. It reeks of coverup at that point.

That seems like a reason to challenge the legality of the pardons. I'm aware of the scenario of Trump giving out pardons and then being pardoned by Pence. But does Pence even want the job under current circumstances? He is refusing to act on the 25th and probably couldn't now with the cabinet dropping out of sight like a magic act.

George Conway tweeted that he thinks there are 67 votes for a conviction in the Senate. If so, would Pence still not want the position for a few days? If it went straight to Pelosi, Trump would not be pardoned, although he might pardon everyone else while the impeachment is in progress.

I heard a discussion on NPR with a legal expert (sorry, didn't get the name) who said any pardons Trump issues now, especially for the insurrectionists, might be successfully challenged because of 1) Trump's instability, and 2) suspicion of coverup for himself. Same with Trump trying to pardon himself.

Would Pence dare to pardon Trump after Wednesday's coup attempt? Talk about coverup. The whole nation except Trump's cult would be outraged and Pence's future would be down the drain. Might get himself investigated and charged.

What an effin' mess. And what a shame that Trump survived covid.

most of those so far would be applicable to local burglary.

Where's crossing state lines, conspiracy, destruction of property, and something applicable to federal buildings and disrupting Congress?

This fiasco cost taxpayers and insurers if there are any lots of money. It probably costs at least $75k per hour to hold Congress in session - utilities, personnel other than salaried, security, overhead.

This was an expensive stunt that these law-abiding police-supporting lawbreakers pulled.

The article is written poorly, so it's difficult to tell if it's the same Alabama resident or someone else.

Barnett was charged with knowingly entering and remaining in restricted building grounds without authority, violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds as well as the theft of public property, officials said.

A resident of Alabama was also charged in connection with the pipe bomb found on the south side of the Capitol building. Eleven Molotov cocktails and military-style weapon were found in his pickup truck, officials said.

Despite his message of "love" for them, he only loves himself. These people are useful idiots for Trump's big lie. I hope these slack-jawed, bogger eating morons hold their breath, thinking that their hero will get them out of this. That will save the U.S. government money from having to feed and house them in prison, because they'll be six feet under in a cold grave due to autoasphyxiation.

Was Nancy there telling him he could have it?

I guess that is "trumpster logic".

One thing i would like to see along with whatever else the courts say is mandatory constitutional and history classes for ALL of them.

Maybe I'm wron but I thought I read that somewhere. If so, maybe someone can make that happen. Or better yet, maybe he can have a cell mate who no longer cares and is around 6'5" and ripped. And lest i forget, African American. Or...just let him stay in solitary confinement for his entire time in prison.

82. Relax, these are only the initial charges to get him in custody..

Lots of additional charges can take months to process. Give Garland and new DOJ time in office to get things right. Many will be charged with conspiracy, murder, destruction of a national monument, assault, etc.

They do not know if this guy was one in the group who caused the death of the cop or what else he did. Lots more charges will come for many initially arrested on charges like he was today.

92. I Find It Really Amusing, In An Ironic Way, That the GOP Claims To Be The Law & Order Party

But they've lost that claim, and people here seem to be much more supportive of Law Enforcement than the Republicans are. Oh sure, they mouth platitudes, but they don't stand behind what they say they mean. The only thing they seem to stand for is Trump. And a lot are anti-abortion, which is enough of a reason for them to vote for him (like he hasn't caused unplanned pregnancies in his past that led to abortions), but they sure as hell aren't law & order!

How about charging him with more serious crimes???

Every person involved in this insurrection should be charged as being complicit in any death that occurred because of this. Every one that has been identified and apprehended should go straight to jail. No bail, and tried not only for the deaths, but as traitors.

I’m sure he’ll be charged with espionage or at least insurrection when whatever he stole comes to light.

Bet he’s not feeling so cocky now, tho.

He was part of a coup attempt. I guess the DA is just trying to figure out which charges can stick.
