Retired Lieutenant Colonel is identified as the MAGA rioter carrying zip ties who appeared to exit Nancy Pelosi's vandalized office - as his family say he became obsessed with Trump and believes in taking over the country
Retired Lieutenant Colonel Larry Rendall Brock Jr., 53, was among the violent mob of Trump supporters who stormed the US Capitol Wednesday
The father-of-three, who now lives in Dallas, was pictured on the Senate floor
He wore a combat helmet, body armor and a vinyl tag with the Punisher skull on - a symbol adopted by white supremacists and QAnon believers
---------
Two family members, who have not been named, told the New Yorker Brock called himself a patriot, had started making racist comments and that they believe he was influenced by white supremacy.
'[He started saying] weird rage talk, basically, saying he's willing to get in trouble to defend what he thinks is right, which is Trump being the President, I guess,' one of the family members said.
They added that he developed a 'weird sense of power' from his military career and that he 'doesn't understand the fallout and the people he's hurting.'
That said, they were surprised to see him with the zip ties: 'I can't imagine what he was doing there with zip ties, or what he thought he was going to accomplish.'

(10,484 posts)How do you stop the far-right using the Punisher skull? Make it a Black Lives Matter symbol
Gerry Conway, co-creator of the popular Marvel outlaw, has been appalled to see his iconography appropriated by white supremacists - and aims to turn the tables.
Sometimes it takes a bootleg T-shirt to stop a bootleg T-shirt. For years, the military, the police and white supremacists have displayed the skull symbol of Marvels comic-book outlaw the Punisher on unauthorised clothes, bumper stickers and spray-paint stencils. But, as Black Lives Matter protests around the world draw attention to institutionalised racism, Gerry Conway, the Punishers politically progressive co-creator and writer, is launching an unusual fundraiser: his own line of shirts designed by people of colour to take the symbol back from the right, with proceeds to go to Black Lives Matter.
[The skull] should be a symbol for Black Lives Matter, Conway says. It should be a symbol for people on the outside of the justice system. I want the movement to claim this symbol for themselves.

(10,484 posts)partly focusing on why carrying the battle flag of the confederacy that waged a bloody war against the USA so they could keep owning people is the opposite of patriotism.
MyOwnPeace
(17,601 posts)From Charles Pierce, writer for Esquire:
The guy with the Confederate battle flag was walking through my favorite spot in the Capitol: just outside the Senate chamber, and to the right as you walk over from the House of Representatives. On the walls around that corner are portraits of Henry Clay, who tried to keep the country from coming apart by cutting deals with the slave power, and John C. Calhoun, who provided the philosophical basis for why those deals were futile, and Charles Sumner, who was beaten half to death at his desk in the Senate chamber, which was one of the first signs that Clays compromises were futile because Calhouns philosophy had triumphed over them, as much of the country knew it would. And there was the banner of its triumph, being walked past the chamber of the United States Senate, its meaning well-understood by the insurrectionist who bought it. A couple of days later, Josh Delaney, a Black staffer in the office of Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, the woman holding the seat that once belonged to Charles Sumner, wrote in The Boston Globe:
Growing up in Georgia, I saw that flag several times a week in front of homes, restaurants, and stores as a symbol of hate that carried a simple message: You are not welcomed here. But this was the first time Id seen that message on display at my place of work. Ive walked the halls of Congress so often that I probably take for granted how my very presence in the building is a miracle the result of years of hard-fought civil rights victories and justice work. And consequently, a threat to racists and white nationalists who wish to take us back to whenever they perceived America was great. I spent most of the afternoon letting friends know I was OK and safe, but this photo made me realize, no, Im not. And the rioters in that mob did not intend for me or my colleagues to feel safe.

I think that whenever anyone tries to use that BS line about the traitor flag, "It's not hate, it's heritage," we all need to reply, "But your heritage is hate."

(5,386 posts)The reporter was just reporting what he saw, that the guys he saw with them didn't bring them in with them. He was quite sure they decided they could be useful for their purpose once they found them, however. That's all.
For all we know, they broke into the locker to get them, knowing they would be there. We already think someone on the inside gave them info.

(5,386 posts)(And some of which have nothing to do with what I said?) I was merely repeating what a reporter had said on CNN. Neither he nor I have implied that the fact that at least SOME of the men carrying them had found them on site somehow absolved them of motive or guilt. I KNEW what the gallows was for. I saw it in the background of another shot early in the day and had no doubt that it was intended for executions. When I saw that a guillotine had been set up in Phoenix, AZ that clinched for me that this was their intention around the country, and that meant they were well organized. So, please, just stop. I was merely adding a bit of information to the discussion. That does not mean I need to have all of these other things I already know as well explained to me like I must be uninformed.

(13,429 posts)More "honest" statements from Mr. Brock:
Brock denied that he had entered Pelosis office suite, saying that he stopped five to ten feet ahead of the sign bearing her title that insurrectionists later tore down and brandished. However, in the ITV video, he appears to emerge from the suite. Brock said that he had worn tactical gear because I didnt want to get stabbed or hurt, citing B.L.M. and Antifa as potential aggressors. He claimed that he had found the zip-tie handcuffs on the floor. I wish I had not picked those up, he told me. My thought process there was I would pick them up and give them to an officer when I see one. . . . I didnt do that because I had put them in my coat, and I honestly forgot about them. He also said that he was opposed to vandalizing the building, and was dismayed when he learned of the extent of the destruction. I know it looks menacing, he told me. That was not my intent.

'I didn't do that because I had put them in my coat, and I honestly forgot about them.'
He also claimed he 'stopped five to ten feet ahead of the sign' at the entrance to Pelosi's office door and did not enter.
Footage appears to show him emerging from the office with a group of other rioters.
Further, Brock claimed he saw no violence and was opposed to damaging the Capitol.
'I know it looks menacing. That was not my intent,' he said.
Instead, he claimed he wore the body armor for his own protection because he feared he would get 'stabbed or hurt' by 'BLM or Antifa'.
