We have to have 50 for the Vice President to break the tie.

(65,031 posts)The full context of his statement was that the stimulus wasn't priority 1. What he thought it was, is the streamlining of vaccine distribution to get COVID under control.
He didn't actually say he didn't support the $1,400 payments.

(15,211 posts)...they'll likely be as obstinate as Manchin on progressive policies too.

I was explaining the Manchin problem to Mrs. Lib Wednesday morning after we celebrated the two wins in Georgia.

I also understand Manchin's "problem" - there's plenty of thought that if we didn't "settle" for him as a W.Va senator we'd be sure to have another RepubliCon instead. I can see that to a point - but it should also be a responsibility of HIS to educate his electorate as to why HE is the better choice no matter what.

(16,926 posts)50 of them standing there holding their "pockets" open and saying "What can you do for me?" Manchin is following in the footsteps of a "legend" of "pork barrel" projects for one's home state - Robert Byrd.
Not saying they want to line their own pockets - just looking for "goodies" to take back to their home state to make them popular with the voters at home.

(2,248 posts)Concisely, where has he sided with Democrats and where has he sided with Republicans? To the point: what does he have in common with Dems?

(182,802 posts)Going back to the New Deal. WV (Sen. Byrd) is a public funding hole.
Its fairly recent - really this century - for anyone to run as a Republican and have any chance of winning. Gov. Justice was even elected as a Dem and recently switched.

(68,565 posts)to set up retirement plan to destroy Social Security. I have laid out his votes. The one that most will harp on is voting to not allow abortion after the 20th week ...to that I say. He has to win in WVA. And it was not going to pass...sometimes Manchin votes with the Repugs when it doesn't matter which makes sense.

(68,565 posts)I understand that we want to get something done. we have had 10 years with no policy gains....since the house was lost in 10...but we should begin with the pandemic...and I bet some deal will be worked out to send additional aid.
Demsrule86
(68,565 posts)same mold really. And moderates will be a force in any legislation, but consider there would be no legislation without them as McConnell would be the leader. Now rather than go after Manchin, please consider without his risky vote given from the state he represents he voted to save the ACA. We are going to have to work towards policy that can be agreed on by our caucus which will include moderate and even some conservative leaning members in both the House and the Senate. It has always been true that given the way our government is set up, we need a big tent. Maybe in time, we can win over the red states and convince the folks to favor our progressive policies. I hope so. But for now; in order to hold a majority, we must have Senators from purple and red districts...it is simply a fact.
