A rioter filmed wearing military gear and carrying zip-tie handcuffs on the Senate floor has been identified as a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel.
Larry Rendall Brock, Jr., an Air Force Academy graduate and combat veteran from Texas, was seen in photos and videos roaming around the Capitol and even breaking into House Speaker Nancy Pelosis office suite along with other pro-Trump demonstrators, the New Yorker reported Friday.
He confirmed to the outlet that he was the man in photos and videos.
Brock had been employed with Hillwood Airways, a private aviation company in Fort Worth. The company told The Dallas Morning News on Saturday that the Air Force veteran has been fired.

(8,200 posts)Mow them down instead of treating them with kid gloves. They sure didn't react like the police at peaceful Black Life's Matter protest. They attacked the people without even their threat of provocation. I really wonder will this end or is it only the beginning. I fear for our nation. At my advanced age it may not greatly affect me, except to make my blood pressure go out of sight. But, I sure wonder about what kind of life will my grandkids have.
I served in the military and I am really surprised that an officer would be engaged in open insurrection. I know that most of the officers were staunch Republicans when I served, but I can't imagine they would support this against the oath in which we swore to protect the Constitution with our life against both foreign and domestic threats.

(4,109 posts)When confronted, he owned up to what he did. Lying is frowned upon in the military, especially in the officer corps. Put him on the stand and figure out how deep this goes. Maybe after some reflection he'll actually do what's right and rat out anyone else who may have been involved.
We need full sunlight on what happened. No "moving on" BS. This may have been more serious than just an unruly mob.

(13,480 posts)Trump demanded someone in the White House or among his advisers (maybe Flynn) to come up with a plan for stealing the election. The coup was the last resort when all the lawsuits failed and the Supreme Court refused to rescue him. His lawyers most likely knew all along that all the court cases would fail because there was no evidence of fraud.
Trump fired Esper on November 9, so he knew he was losing and put his people in the Pentagon. Chris Miller replaced Esper and most likely started working on military chiefs to support a coup. Thats why the 10 former defense secretaries wrote to publicly warn against using the military. Miller was able to use his position, though, to prevent the National Guard from supporting the Capitol Police initially to give the terrorists time to storm the Capitol.
So my question is, who planned this coup for Trump and who collaborated? Several people need to be investigated and charged with treason. This coup attempt was not just a spontaneous riot, though it was made to appear that way.

It's really going to take time to sort all of this out. With so many yahoos involved I can't imagine they are all going to stick to their story that they just walked in when they saw the police retreat. Full sunlight, hearings, testament under oath et cetera. I don't care if it takes a year to sort all of this out. Get a full report then do a real impeachment and prosecute all of the dumb-ass bastards.

The Air Force Academy graduate claimed to have found the flex cuffs he was carrying on the floor. I wish I had not picked those up, he said. My thought process there was I would pick them up and give them to an officer when I see one.

(7,604 posts)HE PARTICIPATED IN AN INSURRECTION AGAINST HIS OWN GOVERNMENT. He furthered a coup. He was carrying devices meant for mass arrests without authorization. His actions were consistent with some in the organized insurrection who stated their intention to assassinate members of Congress and the VP. So, no, losing his pension and his honorable discharge is a slap on the wrist, relatively speaking.

They brought a former solider, Timothy Hennis, who had been out of the service for years and that is what they did. With precedent cases, this should be done.

(7,593 posts)Enlisted personnel can receive, in increasing severity, an 'other than honorable discharge', a 'bad conduct discharge', or a 'dishonorable discharge'. An officer who is punitively kicked out of the armed forces is considered 'dismissed' and carries the same penalties as a dishonorable discharge - loss of pension, loss of VA benefits, loss of voting rights, loss of right to bear arms, and becoming ineligible for almost any kind of government aid (Pell grants, FHA loans, etc.). If Larry Brock had been an enlisted member, he could potentially try to keep his voting, 2nd amendment, and non-VA government aid rights by cutting a plea deal with the military for a bad conduct discharge instead of a dishonorable one. Being an officer, he doesn't have that luxury though; he is royally screwed if the Air Force recalls and court martials him.

(15,401 posts)The nasty John Birch type; Gen. Jack Ripper in Dr. Strangelove was not so much a joke about.a crazy military officer but was an actual slight exaggeration of Gen. Curtis LaMay and some of his staff officers. Being given the liberty to evangelize an entire military service for a holy war against the Godless Soviets is one of reason why Focus on the Family is headquartered near the Air Force Officer's Academy, and most complaints against officers (and Chaplins) for inappropriate evangelical harassment at the workplace has come from Air Force bases.
It doesn't surprise me to hear of a significant percentage of former AF officers or officer's staff being sucked into the Q-anon hole. Not that it wouldn't also surprise me to hear of other former military involved. Reagan's DoD believed in dumbing down civics and personal responsibility in both the officer and enlisted ranks with the purpose of creating a standing military to make money for oligarchs and the MIC and to protect their political strategies.
Haele
SuprstitionAintthWay
(386 posts)...the AF has long had a higher % of its officers far to the right on the political spectrum than either the Army or Navy. Marine Corps, I couldn't say.
I'm not certain why that is. I'm sure somebody has studied it. My own speculation includes that it might have been a mistake to locate its Academy in such a bastion of conservatism and intense religiosity as Colorado Springs. That the AF Academy's isolation from the so-called coastal media and academia elites denied it the moderating effects against radicalization that the Army, Navy, and Coast Guard academies probably have benefited from.
All this being relative, of course. There is no shortage of far rightwingers in the officer corps of any branch of the U.S. military.
I also wonder if Air Force founding father Gen. Curtis LeMay's legacy plays a role. LeMay advocated for and applied our fire bombing of Japan's cities, burning to death many, many civilians in the process. And in the Korean War he was responsible for the flattening of every city in North Korea. A result of which was the death of 20 to 25% of North Korea's population... which is an astronomical rate of death in war. (And which, side effect, made the surviving North Koreans extremely susceptible to its government using intense hatred of the U.S. as its primary unifying principle.)
In short, it's probably fair to suspect LeMay, while an effective warrior, might have been okay with racial genocide. Does that history - the Air Force was just branching off from the Army in WWII - also affect its culture, and make it a bit different?
Just speculating. I'm sure, as I said, someone's studied all this.

(7,811 posts)..... USAF Academy. That is the place that is supposed to build leaders, not followers.
I would be curious when he was at the Academy. If he was there when the evangelicals started pressuring the curriculum and the environment at the academy?
Every four years, he should have taken a reenlistment oath. I always have questions if the intent of the evangelicals was to make the military followers put the bible and religion before their oath to the Constitution.
Something has changed at West Point as well. I believe 45+ cadets broke their honor code and were caught cheating.
Rebl2 I was in before your husband but TOTALLY agree with him.
I would add one more punishment. If he went to the USAF Academy, as reported in MSM, he should pay back every penny of the four-year college education.
