The argument about having the senate trial later is beyond stupid. Once Trump is out, the sense of urgency is gone. The second we send the articles of impeachment ( that hopefully we will have voted on this week) to the senate, the gop senators will simply say its moot since Trump is out and turn the argument around saying democrats are playing politics. I can already see minority leader McConnel say that with a smug face
" Our friends on the other side of the aisle are more interested about scoring political points than doing the business of the country "
etc... cue in the bullshit

(8,059 posts)They will gladly brush aside anything that distracts or takes away resources from their legislative agenda. I don't agree with it.

(7,638 posts)my question is rhetorical. I know people like Clyburn are not politically inept. I can only conclude the same thing you did.

(45,806 posts)are lots of Pubs in the Senate who want to run for POTUS in 2024 & they would welcome the idea of not having DT as a candidate too. I think there will be more Pubs than you think who will support conviction.

(86,843 posts)Since we have to wait for MM to be the minority leader, he said he wouldn't bring it to the floor until at least the 19th, it would be best to wait until we have all our Senators seated and control the Senate. Then the successful conviction is more possible. And since the main point at this late date id to make sure he can never hold office again and could cause him to lose all federal benes, it's not the worst thing on the planet.

(7,638 posts)from their base by voting before the 20th by claiming urgency to stop Trump wont have it after the 20th and then simply acquit.

(35,450 posts)He should be impeached and prosecuted once he leaves office. Hiding behind, "hey, let's just move on", is not going to work this time. Otherwise, this will happen again, and the next time, it will be much worse.
im hoping he stays pissed at Pence and does not resign if we fail to remove him before the 20th. If he then attempt to pardon himself this could go down in flames and he will be prosecutable for everything including all that was found by Mueller.

(25,499 posts)It's essentially a meaningless gesture. The only benefit is that he would probably be excluded from running for future office, but his political career ended this week. It's symbolic and little else.
That's assuming the Senate will convict. I'm not convinced they will. Plenty of R Senators in red states have little reason to dump him - their constituents still support him.

(7,638 posts)Obviously Pelosi or Clyburn are not inept which means they prefer that alternate outcome. Its even more distressing.

(7,638 posts)and blindly think my leaders are always right. We are a democracy. We will see if indeed that strategy is the best one.
However a look at past history is not reassuring. We have yet to manage to hold Trump or most of the gop seditionists accountable. Its not just recent, it has been going on since the Reagan years .
Of course a third possibility is that they have recognized they wont have the votes so they prefer to push Biden's first 100 days agenda before the senate trial.

(16,373 posts)it's a whole different animal. I still don't expect the Senate to convict...but Schumer can bring a LOT of shit in to evidence....

(18,486 posts)The Senate can do a trial McConnell's way or they can do it Schumer's way.
I think we would all prefer that it be done Schumer's way.
