Just a little over an hour ago. I have to wait until tomorrow at 7 am for the pick up service from the crematorium.
Lola was nearly 13 and had been with me for 11 years and 3 months of that time. I loved her dearly. She became suddenly ill a week ago, and the vet told me she was dying but not in pain, so I took her home to die with me rather than in a vets office where I couldn't be with her because of COVID. It was a stressful week, but I'm glad I was able to give her lots of love during this week's time. She certainly gave me a great deal of soul-healing love during our years together.
This picture is from just a couple of days ago.

i tried to find that cartoon for you that i think the above poster might have been thinking of.
take care of yourself in the days ahead; you know, love is so important--it's basically the only thing that really matters and we don't lose it when we die. i don't think our fur friends lose it either. we all keep it with us and that's what holds us together--even across that veiled divide.

(144,919 posts)It is hard saying goodbye to a member of the family. Six years ago, we had to say goodbye to my bearded collie. He was 15.5 years old which is very old for this breed. My son and youngest daughter were able to say goodbye to Spenser earlier and my middle child was in law school in Iowa. I ended up flying her home picking her up at the airport and driving to the vet's office. Spenser was fully alert and was happy to see my middle child. She was there when they gave my friend the shot and she flew back to law school the next day. Last year we drove up to Wisconsin to pick up two beardie puppies who are littermates. I have to admit that my dog has really helped me during the quarantine.

Lola was a beauty.
St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and ecology, was born in Italy around 1181-1182.
It is my hope that the inspiration of Saint Francis will help us to keep ever alive a sense of fraternity with all those good and beautiful things which Almighty God has created. And may he remind us of our serious obligation to respect and watch over them with care, in light of that greater and higher fraternity that exists within the human family.
From Pope John Paul II, Message of His Holiness Pope John Paul II for the Celebration of the World Day of Peace: Peace with God the Creator, Peace with all of Creation, 1 January 1990, paragraph 16.

BainsBane
(53,012 posts)I appreciate it. One of the things I didn't mention in the OP is that I've got her body in the kitchen until 7 am when the cremation service comes. That's where she died. Earlier tonight she walked to the back door, like she wanted to get out, but lay down because she was too weak. A bit later she tried to walk into the other room but couldn't make it past the middle of a very tiny kitchen. She lay there for a long time. That's where she died. I moved her closer to the back door after she died. It's not like having a strange animal's body in the house, though. She's still my girl, even if her soul has gone.

(7,558 posts)It was 2 months and 3 days ago that we had to euthanize our beloved cat Bermuda, and we were both allowed to be with him in his last moments here on earth.
Even though we have a remaining cat that is still with us, Bermuda's presence is still here and with us. There are certain things and noises that he use to do and make that still continue to happen on occasion. I believe it's his way of letting us know that he's checking up on us. If you pay attention you will most likely notice typical things happening that Lola use to do at home. Unconditional love between a human and their pet family members is a powerful energy.

True indeed that dogs are our very best friends. My dog is my own little buddha/teacher because she embodies those most God-like and life-affirming qualities of unconditional love, perpetual forgiveness and unbounded joy.
I am so glad you had your time together!

We have a beloved 13-year-old dog on oxygen support at the vet's right now because he can't breathe on his own. He might go any time, but we can't bring him home. It's our daughter's dog and she is taking this hard.

(212 posts)Our Shepherd of 8 years was put down in November from a nerve disease. It was the humane thing to do. Thought I was prepared, I wasnt. My philosophy has always been when there is a emotional hole in your life you need to fill it. I know there will never be another Lola for you just as there will never be another Sophie for us. After about a week of suffering, my wife and I decided to get another Shepherd in the spring. Too hard to train a puppy in the winter was our thinking. My daughter observed us apparently and brought us a beautiful Shepherd puppy before Christmas! After living with Lucy for a few weeks I cannot fathom why we waited That long! I hope this doesnt sound insensitive but trust me fill the hole.

We almost lost ours a week ago last Sunday, but the animal hospital pulled him through. Again. My wife and I had a pretty miserable time until the vet called at 5:30am on Monday morning. Ozzie, Cairn Of Steel comes through again.
I wish you had had the same miracle. Again, my deepest condolences.

(28,442 posts)I had to put my dog Bear down almost exactly two years ago. He was about 15 and had been with me since 2006. I've since adopted two dogs (bonded pair, Burt, age 7, and Ernie, age 5), and while I'm enjoying getting to know the, and already love them,, I still sometimes ache for my sweet Bearbaroo. Sending sweet dreams to you, of Lola meeting up with Bear and chasing squirrels together over the rainbow bridge. And of course, I wish that for Lola, as well as an eternity of limitless bacon and cheese.
Here's Bear, about six months before he left me.

(309 posts)in this painful time. A loss of a loved companion is the loss of a family member. AS one who has, through the years, lost several dogs, you as am I will never forget their presence, the joy they bring, the antics and personalities they have, their unique habits. So sorry for the loss of your pal.

(5,870 posts)My neighbors had to put their dog to sleep today. It hurts and will for a while. Remember that you will grieve for her just like any other creature you've loved. And there is no right or wrong way to grieve. You don't get over it, you just go through it and day by day it gets easier.
My dog died in 1998, and I still miss him. Haven't gotten another one because I just don't want to go through that again. (And no, I'm not Mr. Bojangles).....

(24,523 posts)Lola will be leaving a big hole in your life and your heart. I was with one of my dogs when she passed and it was very bittersweet. I was grateful to be with her, remind her of how loved she was and how much joy she brought to my life, but it was tough when she took her last breath. I hope your memories of Lola will be a comfort for you.

(17,605 posts)...called The Rainbow Bridge. Its a site where folks can pay a small fee to have their beloved fur child remembered with a tribute page. The pet owners post stories and poems and photos along with music. Its there for other folks to visit and leave condolences as well. I started reading all the stories and tribute pages and I cried and cried until I had no more tears. All those tears helped with the healing. The next day I brought home two 8 week old litter mate Goldens and they were with me for 7yrs (Sam) and his sister (Sara) for 12 years.
I never created tribute pages for any of my own beloved pets but I do volunteer as a bereavement counselor for the site.
Please know you are in my thoughts and close to my heart as you say good bye to your best friend and fur child. Godspeed, precious Lola.. what a GOOD girl you are!

(1,332 posts)As a dog parent, I am so sorry. We've gone thru this twice, our first was a 12 year old pit mix, smartest dog I've ever had and I grew up with dogs. She had bone cancer with a big
tumor. Our second, BooBoo died from old age at 14. Which isn't bad for a lab tripod mix.
It is always so hard when they die. All we can cling to is that they have had a good life with their human family All our dogs have been rescue dogs so we pretty much know their fate if we hadn't adopted them. We now have an 8 year old lab boxer mix. know it's too soon, but there's always another dog out there looking for a home...

(81,110 posts)I'm so sorry to hear this. Makes me think of our beloved Goldie - sweet shepherd mix who was with us about 14 years. Nobody knew how old she was when we fell in love with her at the local shelter and made her OURS.
Lola, wherever you are, it's my pleasure to introduce you to Goldie! And several cats - Barney, dB, Mousetrap, Dub, and Ernie. They're all hanging out at the Rainbow Bridge where you'll find you have many new friends. (Getting teary-eyed as I write this. DAMN I miss Goldie...)
Hope if there's a hereafter that I can eventually visit the Rainbow Bridge and love 'em all up, all over again. Your Lola will undoubtedly be settling in comfortably.
