Las Vegas mogul Sheldon Adelson, major Trump and Netanyahu backer, dies at 87

Jewish-American billionaire casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, known in his later years for his patronage of US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as well as his philanthropy, has died at the age of 87.

Adelson’s death was confirmed Tuesday in a statement from his wife, Miriam Adelson, citing “complications from a long illness.”

Born in Boston in 1933, the son of a cab driver saw stunning success in the business world before becoming one of the Republican Party’s most influential benefactors and a key figure in Israeli philanthropy and politics.

...

Blunt yet secretive, the squatly-built Adelson resembled an old-fashioned political boss and stood apart from most American Jews, who for decades have supported Democrats by wide margins. Adelson was considered the nation’s most influential GOP donor over the final years of his life, at times setting records for individual contributions during a given election cycle.

Adelson and his wife, Miriam, almost single-handedly bankrolled the group behind Newt Gingrich’s presidential bid in 2012 before shifting their personal fortune toward Mitt Romney’s campaign.

They then backed Trump to the tune of $30 million in 2016. They followed that by contributing $100 million to the Republican Party for the 2018 midterm elections. In all, Adelson donated over $250 million to GOP candidates and super PACs since 2015.

...

During his presidency, Trump’s Israel policies recalled the right-wing views on the Jewish state favored by the Adelsons, and he awarded Miriam the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her medical philanthropy.

“To protect the sacred heritage of the Jewish faith, Miriam and Sheldon have supported Jewish schools, Holocaust memorial organizations, and helped Jewish Americans visit the Holy Land,” Trump said during a reception in the White House’s East Room.

Adelson was a leading opponent of the nuclear deal that the United States, under then-president Barack Obama, negotiated with Iran over its rogue nuclear program, and gave donations to Republican candidates who opposed the deal. He was widely credited as a key player in Trump’s decision to withdraw from the accord.

...

His attachment to Israel was life-long and so deep that he once said he wished his military service had been in an Israeli uniform instead of an American one.

...

The Adelsons, whose conservative views and devotion to Israel were well known, were also proprietors of Israel Hayom, widely seen as a Netanyahu mouthpiece, and the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

US foreign policy should be formulated for the benefit of the US, not other nations.

14. Sheol or Gehenna

In the Hebrew Bible, Sheol (שאול ) is the "abode of the dead," the "underworld," "the common grave of mankind" or "pit." It is said to be the destination of both the righteous and the unrighteous dead, as described in Book of Job (3:11-19). "Sheol" is also depicted as a comfortless place beneath the earth, beyond gates, where both slave and king, pious and wicked must go after death to sleep in silence and oblivion in the dust.

...

By the first century, Jews had come to believe that those in Sheol awaited the resurrection of the body either in comfort or in torment. This belief is reflected in the later Jewish concept of a fiery Gehenna, which contrasts with Sheol.

In Judaism, Gehenna (or Ge-hinnom) is a fiery place where the wicked are punished after they die or on Judgment Day, a figurative equivalent for "Hell." Gehenna also appears in the New Testament and early Christian writings, and is known in Islam as Jahannam. The powerful imagery of Gehenna originates from a ancient real place; thus Gehenna serves an example of the interplay between literal and symbolic meanings in scripture.

From my understanding, Gehenna was an actual place around Jerusalem where they burnt trash 24/7 and used Sulphur to keep it burning.

Of course, when the King James bible translated the ancient scriptures, they simply took these three words to denote the grave or death, Sheol, Gehenna and Hades and simply replaced them with the word HELL. Lot's of important concepts were lost in the translation.
