Mary Trump on why Trump is visiting Alamo, TexasLast edited Tue Jan 12, 2021, 11:19 AM - Edit history (1)

President Donald Trump's niece, Mary Trump, tells CNN's Chris Cuomo that Trump is "undoubtedly" visiting Alamo, Texas, to invoke the symbolism behind the historic battle that happened there. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- He is visiting some random town on the border named Alamo. The real Alamo is the old church in San Antonio, which doesn't want him. But his cult is too lazy to find out. ![]() ![]() ![]()

16. I've been to the real Alamo, as many Americans have
The history of the place is impressive and memorable. However the Alamo Memorial is a simple museum (preserved Spanish-style mission) that is in no way grand or gaudy. Chump would probably turn his nose up at it. He'd surely call it a dump, and then he'd move on to some glittering hotel in Houston or Dallas that has 2-story escalators.

24. A mostly empty building when I was there 4 years ago
The museum was a separate building. The Alamo itself was reconstructed over the years (the facade is not original).
There's a string of other missions around San Antonio: a local told me they were more interesting than the Alamo, and that the city ran a free bus service to them and other tourist sites. One of them is still in use as a Catholic church: there's an arrangement between the US Park Service and the church that the latter maintains the active churches while the former maintains the grounds and exhibits. And they acknowledge that people lived in the area before the Americans tried to take over. |

27. A few things happened recently:
The Alamo itself was taken over by the Texas Land Commissioner due to infrastructure issues. (About 5 years ago)
The City of San Antonio along with the Land Commissioner came up with plans for renovating Alamo Plaza. To open up the space they were going to move this large monument called the cenotaph...the Oath Keepers and all those crazies started to move in around that time to protect the cenotaph. Then in 2017, came Charlottesville and a confederate statute at a place called Travis Park..(About 2 miles away) The city decided to move the confederate monument. (I know it doesn't have anything to do with the Alamo, but these yahoos think it does and they were already mad about the cenotaph) Then George Floyd happens, BLM and white nationalists clash on Alamo Plaza. The white nationalists rally around the cenotaph. In 2020 the state said the cenotaph could not be moved. The Oath Keepers, White Nationalists are there to protect the cenotaph and not the Alamo. https://www.tpr.org/2020-09-22/texas-historical-commission-denies-request-to-relocate-alamos-cenotaph-monument https://texasscorecard.com/local/after-citizen-outcry-state-votes-to-keep-alamo-cenotaph-monument-on-battlefield/ |

23. Trump knows very little.
He relies on the emotional weight of the symbol to perpetuate his lies. The Alamo, although mythologized in American History, was actually a bunch of Texans, defying the lawful order of the Mexican government to either give up their slaves or leave the territory. It wasn't a heroic stand against an invading horde. It was the Mexican army trying to push out the invading horde.
All Trump knows is that "Remember the Alamo" was a bigoted battle cry depicting Mexicans as "other" and evil. What he knows is that his supporters are likely as ignorant of the actual history as he is. |

19. It isn't random, but it is contrived to deceive.
I said this in a post yesterday. "Like everything Trump, this is a knock off. The town of Alamo is actually a nod to the Alamo Mission in San Antonio. Like you said however, Trump likely could not get San Antonio officials to okay using the actual Alamo as a backdrop and likely feared massive protest from San Antonians so he chose Alamo Texas, a town of about 20,000 people, mostly White, along the border, to make his "last stand".
He is an idiot, but his followers are even bigger idiots. |
