Did you notice how the attempted coup was stopped only after the Guard was called out and rolled in with big trucks? We came this close to having the Capitol secured by the attackers, and possibly much, much worse. We were lucky. And, who was it that opposed the Guard being called, and delaying that?

This was a planned coup and mass murder event with inside help from trump and his hand picked military senior staff.

(6,513 posts)While the main Military cannot be used to defend against a coup, the National Guard can. And. they were effective. I hope all the State Guards are on alert to action in case they really do plan some violent attempt to overcome State Government.
The Guard wasn't allowed to show up until the Vice President called for them. Pence was lucky he didn't get hanged by this mob. Why he is protecting Trump, I'll never know. He should be telling the entire GOP that Trump's impeachment is good to go. And, if he had gone 25A, he could have immediately grabbed Trump and put him in detention. What's to think about?

It is shocking that the NG guy said that their normal deployment time is 8 to 10 hours after authorization for mobilization. This is shocking. If they got called out, which the Mayor of DC did days earlier, they should have been fully armored up and ready to shift position.
Can we count on the Guard to save our asses if something like this happens?? It seems to me that rapid response teams need to be TRAINED and already be briefed on what they can and can't do as part of a normal training of the Guard. Apparently, they sent troops that were already on scene over; that's why we saw them and they seem to be the only reason that the rioters quit.
This was a big fail of epic proportions. And, did you notice how the Governors of adjacent states armored up and had their guys ready to go at the border, but had to wait because they didn't have authorization to cross the line? This needs to be addressed as well.
