From CNN's Josiah Ryan
Reports that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell may be open to impeachment in the House could point to a "potential earthquake" in the upper chamber, Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff said.
CNN reported today that McConnell had indicated to associates that he believed impeaching President Trump could make it easier to rid the Republican Party of the President and Trumpism. McConnell has not said if he will vote to convict or whether he'd hold a trial in the Senate.
"These reports that Mitch McConnell may be open to the impeachment charges as well is a potential earthquake in the Senate," said Schiff, who was one of the lead investigators in the first impeachment of Trump.
Schiff also praised Rep. Liz Cheney, the No. 3 House Republican, for her own statement in favor of impeachment, and said he expected many Republicans to follow her.
"These things have a way of gathering momentum," he said. "I wouldn't be surprised now to see a considerable number of Republicans join in supporting the impeachment resolution."
Three Republican lawmakers in the House had indicated they would vote for impeachment, as of 6:30 p.m. ET today.

(3,384 posts)Senate majority leader. This is just too important to take any chances. Trump must never be able to run for office again. Ever.

And I think trump running for office again is just a fantasy, that SOB will be behind bars for the rest of his life, same with Giuliani, his kids, Kushner, and hopefully a bunch of his enablers.

(20,682 posts)McConnell breaks the damn and the waters are rushing in. There is no longer a reason to oppose reality. Frump is silenced and the voters will never be appeased. Like lemmings, they're all going over the waterfall.

(15,938 posts)I DO NOT TRUST MOSCOWMITCH.
Some examples:
He decides not to really hold a trial like the last time around.
He doesn't have the votes so his leader goes unpunished.
We know Leningrad Lindsey will not vote to convict. I don't think MoscowMitch will either. As a matter of my facts I don't think we would have the votes because everyone is afraid of his base.

(11,085 posts)She's the tiebreaker. She takes the oath just shortly before Biden will on Jan. 20th. So Trump will still be President for only a few minutes while the Democrats have "control" of the Senate. But the Senate will have other things to do that day, like watching the inauguration of Joe Biden on TV. Then Trump won't hold office anymore.
If they want to continue impeachment proceedings against Trump anyway and declare him retroactively unfit, I'd support that. But I'm not sure there's any legal point, since the moment Trump ceases to have the protection from criminal prosecution that the Justice Department says a President has (a bullshit Nixon idea), law enforcement agencies will race each other to see who can slap the handcuffs on Donald fastest.
I'm not sure if Trump will try to hole up in the White House bunker, or if he will try to sneak on a flight to a non-extradition country.

(3,392 posts)If I understand the process correctly, he will loose all his "presidential" benefits, including secret service guard. He will also stop being a threat, and Biden's administration will not have to deal with the impeachment process at the beginning, which would distract from his plans to fix the country, instead they will be able to concentrate on their agenda. That is why the impeachment process has to take place now.
Lets hope that McConnell understands they need to get rid of the buffoon, not only for the country but for the one thing they really care about, the republican party. McConnell understands very well, despite having enabled the buffoon for four years, that the buffoon has caused a lot of damage to the party, and they need to get rid of him ASAP, so my hope is that they will vote to get him out.

(5,007 posts)He could impeach and remove Trump. They could also vote so Trump can never hold office then. He would not have to worry about Trump again. Trump is already finished but he would be REALLY finished then. He will be an afterthought in a few years. Especially without his Twitter megaphone.

(49,001 posts)I don't know if that has to be preceded by a vote to eject from office (moot probably) or if it can be standalone separate.
I think the latter, but I'm not sure.
Regardless, I think Minority Leader McCONnell is done at the end of his term. Finished.
