1). House votes to impeach Trump
2). McConnell signals he WILL allow a vote, and the Senate DOES have the votes to convict and remove.
3). Trump resigns to head off a Senate vote
4). Pence pardons Trump
5). Trump keeps all his goodies...Secret Service, $200K pension, $1 million travel allowance, and can run again in 2024
Not saying it WILL happen, but it is definitely a possibility.

(18,486 posts)He'll still get his pension, budget and Secret Service. He loses his pension and budget only if he's removed from office - and if he's already left office, that can't happen - and he gets his lifetime Secret Service protection regardless how he leaves office.

(66 posts)Pardons don't apply to impeachment. Precedent says resignation doesn't stop them from convicting and declaring he can't run again. Since the last one is a big part of why Republican want to vote for impeachment...

(21,769 posts)I know it did for Nixon but is it an automatic stop? I don't know the answer but I am unaware of anything that says it has to stop the trial. A pardon would cover federal crimes but does an impeachment trial fall under that?

I don't see this, given McConnell is no fool This only helps Trump.
