So, questions for discussion, directed at former military folks

Let me begin by saying, I am not seeking to elicit info that could help terrorists. More trying to calm my own & others' anxieties about the apparent upcoming terrorist event.

That said, is it possible to "surround" the Capitol? It is very large area.

If this were to occur, could NG dissipate the crowd from the air? Or...?

Tyia.

there is going to be a steel ring around the whole area and any of these traitors try to breach the perimeter will be met with force up to and including the use of lethal force.

Looks like they are inside and out ready to form up at any location. With live ammunition being carried Deadly force could be authorized. Trumps Bone spur battalion will be put down quickly. Trump called all those serving losers so there's that.

I was thinking of some action by air. But something that would not damage the grounds or buildings, but I can't imagine what.

Marksmen works, but that is a one-at-a-time approach.

I shoot deer at that range with a $700 rifle with a $300 scope and I have never had any training. Well, except participating in iron sight shooting matches as a kid sponsored by the NRA(back when they were a legit gun safety and training group). I’m not really that great a shot.

I would guess those trained sniper teams are effective out past 700 yards. Their optics and rifles can cost thousands of dollars and only the best are put into the position.

The match shooting sponsored by the old NRA, we used to take our rifles to school on the bus when we had a match or practice..or if we planned on walking home from school and maybe doing some squirrel hunting on the way.. No one thought anything of it in those days.

After school I’d drive to the national forest nearby and squirrel hunt for a few hours! If I got home early enough mother would fry them up for supper. And it was no secret I had it either.

I’m only 54! Of course this was in Arkansas. Some kids kept their deer rifles in the gun rack of their trucks during deer season.

Different times.

But we al owned guns and had a lot of them around the house no one thought anything of it ..50 cents for a box of 22 shorts at the local hardware store sold to anyone no ids I was maybe 12 or 13...

I hit the 4" bullseye from 800 feet, twice with a Springfield 1903 reproduction.
The other five round were within 5 inches of the bull.
I just had a guy with military guy with sharpshooter classification give me some pointers.
Real experts would be WAY better than me.

Everything and anything is possible.
What price are you willing to pay? What price is your opposition willing to pay?
Air Ops only go so far. You will always have to get your hands dirty with the final clean up.
Could they surround the Capitol, extremely unlikely. Would the get their asses handed to them. Most definitely.
Everyone has a plan until the bullets fly. Then who has the nuts, the guts, and discipline to carry out their plan.

Horrifying! Soneone posted a pux on DU months ago. Still gives me chills.

But would that not endanger NG? I so do not want any troops hurt or killed!

I'd initially thought this too & if they are starting fires or shooting, strafing could stop them.

Just surreal.

In my experience they are there to protect and defend the Capital in support of civil authorities. Law enforcement (dissipate the crowd) is normally left to civilian law enforcement while the NG supports; normally the NG is placed in a role where they are NOT required to enforce civilian laws. Cordons and traffic control are good examples. In this scenario it appears they are part of the perimeter and internal security, which is likely a means of preventing a breach.

Laws governing military forces (USC Title 10 and Title 32) are very restrictive when using military personnel for law enforcement.

It doesn't appear that they respect metal detectors or guards
trying to make sure they are not armed.

This is most worrisome.

About the entire capitol area but the white house is covered by anti snipers. They have looked the entire area over and determined the possible sniper nests they then either made sure the could not be used or set up to cover those spots with snipers that watch closely.. 300 yards or 700 yards are pretty much no sweat shots for a trained sniper, there have been successful shots at quite a lot farther than that

longest sniper shot in miles
A Canadian special forces sniper has broken the world record for the longest confirmed kill shot. The soldier shot an IS militant dead from 3,540 metres, which is just over two miles away, in Iraq last month.Jun 23, 2017

Given enough people you can surround anything.

Now how to disburse such a crowd. I'm not sure what you mean when you say from the air. If you mean using choppers with machine guns and rockets, it would be possible but do we really want the lasting images of Inauguration Day to be the military using air strikes on DC? They could drop riot control agents from the air which is better but not by much.

The best way to disburse such a crowd would be to use the troops inside to hold and additional troops outside push the crowd away, making arrests as needed. It would be a simple modification of tactics used to break a siege.
