Timothy Snyder @TimothyDSnyder The more we learn, the less this looks like a coup bound to fail, and the more it looks like plain luck that all of our legislators and our vice-president were not murdered. 12:12 PM · Jan 13, 2021

10. It was a SELF-COUP that had already failed, as Fiona Hill explains
at the link, BUT we came very close to a bloody murder and/or hostage standoff and rescue in our Capitol. She doesn't go into the incompetence and lack of commitment by leaders that contributed to its failure, but merely the structural elements of successful hostile takeovers by members of the current government.

12. I suspect that if the modern GOP wasn't a bunch of corporate funded popinjays...
...if the complicit GOP congress-critters and/or insider staff were actually competent instead of failed professionals/businesspeople, washed out military (up or out bay-bee!), diploma-mill graduates and conservative talking heads who are in it just for the lobbyist or PAC money, it might have succeeded.
That's the scary thing. If there really was a "Frank Underwood" running things in the background instead of a bunch of wannabes, we would be in a much worse position than we are now. Come to think of it, a real "Frank Underwood" would quickly realize that if the election could not be stolen, any subsequent coup would so destroy the nation and the economy that what would be left would not be worth the coup. I would hope the moneyed and business interests behind GOP PACs suddenly have come to the understanding that tearing the country apart means no comfortable profits for decades. No Quarterly Earnings. No markets. No ski resorts or tourist venues. No Infrastructure. There are no profits in the End Times, even if you can carve yourself out a fiefdom in the middle of Colorado where a resort used to be. Nothing but uncertainty and dust. Better to back off, back out, and wait for the next election opening. Haele |

20. He is right.
This came very close to succeeding. In my opinion Trump thought he would get these idiots stirred up, sit and watch TV for a while reveling in the spectacle and then after some number of Congress people were killed or kidnapped he would declare Martial Law and stay in the White House as a self appointed dictator.
Thanks a very small number of security personnel and Capitol Police this coup failed. They are all patriots and deserve recognition for saving this Democracy. |

28. It All Goes Back To That One Security Guard
The rioters had a clear path to the occupied Senate chamber with an unlocked door. The quick thinking security guard shoved the lead protester to make himself the focus of the rioters. It worked as he retreated up a couple flights of stairs where he shoved the rioter once again for one more retreat where he was joined by reinforcements who turned the tables. An insider unlocked the door giving the rioters a direct shot at the Senators and possibly VP Pence. And one quick thinking security guard foiled the whole operation while risking his own life. The nation owes him a debt of gratitude.

Now Mitch won’t bring it up until after rump is out of office. They seem to all be less upset (except Liz). This could go south if it’s once again separate armed camps, us vs them, endless fighting. Hope I’m wrong but it’s not looking good. |

Every Republican in House and Senate heard from the "Forces of Nature" behind that curtain," We won't be undoing the coup just yet. Not if you plan on any further political career approved of and financed by Us."
The GOP thus remains the party of the Confederacy. Racism, Sexism, and Elitism are the Dogma by which Money rules the party. They cannot conceive of another way because the thinkers among them have been culled. |
