After some Republicans balked at going through House metal detectors, Pelosi announces stiff fines.
The fine for the first offense will be $5,000 and $10,000 for the second offense. The fines will be deducted directly from Members salaries by the Chief Administrative Officer

(18,486 posts)This board was full of it over the weekend - people demanding that she impeach immediately and refusing to understand that, not only do House rules not permit instantaneous impeachment, but there are other preparations and other considerations. But, as often happens, folk insisted that Pelosi either is inept (a term actually used), clueless, lacked courage or just didn't understand as well as we do how important this is.

(3,192 posts)But I think Ms Nancy will lower the boom on any fool trying to get around the security system, including the little lady from Colorado who tried to get her killed, Seriously, not only did she tweet Pelosis departure from the chambers -- meaning she was in motion in the building and may be vulnerable to terrorists -- she also refused to open her bag after the metal detectors were installed and detected a metal object inside. And, yes, she was the fool who said shed bring a gun to work.
I think in addition to censure, Boebert is going to be getting a serious pay reduction. I hope she also gets a court date and a prison cell, but Im greedy.

(3,433 posts)Congress is also an employer, and this is suggested as a "withholding salary" rule. I don't see that being permitted. It's a pretty dictatorial power (in an employer sense).
I'm certain that there will be lawsuits on this.
From what I can find (not directly analogous), there is enourmous uncertainty on Congress' ability to use fines as punishment.
"Currently, Congress can achieve its endgame of fining federal officials through an indirect route of civil contempt or criminal contempt. In both cases, Congress would have to initiate a lawsuit (either civil or criminal), obtain a favorable order from a judge, and ultimately ask the judge to use the courts contempt power to impose a fine on the contemnor. However, it is unclear whether Congress can instead issue the fines itself, without having to resort to the courts first. If Congress can issue a fine unilaterally, this power would be more in line with Congresss inherent contempt power of arresting federal officialsthe only avenue of enforcement that courts have so far recognized as not requiring judicial involvement. In both cases of arresting or fining a federal official under the inherent contempt power, Congress can exercise its power first and the action will be subject to review by the courts only after the fact. Therefore, as Schiff has noted, the possibility of fining federal officials under inherent contempt power ameliorates one significant problem with relying on courts to fine officials, namely, the arduous and time-consuming process of obtaining a judicial order.
The legal uncertainty surrounding Congresss power in this area stems from the fact that Congress has never before tried to exert its contempt power by directly issuing fines. Therefore, the courts have never been asked before to judge the legality of such measures. Yet there is clear legal precedent that all but endorses such power. The Supreme Court has consistently analogized between the congressional contempt power and the judiciarys contempt power. For example, in McGrain v. Daugherty (1927), the court was asked to review whether an unsworn committee report could form the basis for a warrant issued by a Senate investigation subcommittee; the court agreed that Congress had that power because the courts of law followed the same practice. In Jurney v. MacCracken (1935), the Supreme Court clearly stated that the power of Congress to punish for contempt is governed by the same principles as the power of the judiciary to punish for contempt. Similarly, in Kilbourn v. Thompson (1880)concerning Congresss impeachment powers, which follow the same quasi-judicial procedures as contempt proceedingsthe Supreme Court stated that Congress should be able to conduct investigations in the same manner and by the use of the same means that courts of justice can in like cases. The court then, in dicta, stated that this would logically give Congress the power to punish by fine or imprisonment, the same options being available to courts (emphasis added)."

(119 posts)Is to take the fines gathered by the scofflaws and make donations IN THE NAME OF the person to various social groups.
You don't wear a mask? Great, your fine is now a donation to medical groups that fight COVID.
You don't pass through a metal detector? Great, your fine is now a donation to groups that help support victims of school shootings.
