Three House members Thursday introduced a bill to award the Congressional Gold Medal to Eugene Goodman, the Capitol Police officer who faced down a mob of mostly White rioters and lured them away from the Senate chamber during last weeks attack on the U.S. Capitol in Washington.
The House members Reps. Charlie Crist (D-Fla.), Emanuel Cleaver II (D-Mo.) and Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) said in a statement Thursday that Goodman valiantly put himself in harms way, luring a violent mob away from an unguarded entrance to the Senate chambers, protecting Senators, staff, and reporters inside.
One of the lawmakers noted that Goodmans actions and quick thinking likely prevented even greater horror from taking place at the Capitol.
If not for the quick, decisive, and heroic actions from Officer Goodman, the tragedy of last weeks insurrection could have multiplied in magnitude to levels never before seen in American history, Cleaver said in a statement. With this prestigious award, we can show our gratitude to Officer Goodman for saving countless lives and defending our democracy.

(18,351 posts)All the brave officers like the ones who were first overrun at the barricade and the ones holding the line at the entrance (including the poor officer who died) should receive medals in a big White House ceremony.

(18,351 posts)You know the one Limbaugh, Nunes, and Jordan also received. Basically the ones who contribute to him having to take such heroic action.

I would genuinely fear for their life if their name becomes public

(10,749 posts)But the real shame is that not more capitol police officers behaved in the same way. Some were actually co-conspirators, others ran away or looked the other way.
Clear out the infiltrators and the cowards and rebuild this force from the ground up.
Put Stacy Abrams in charge. Actually, put Stacy Abrams in charge of everything. I'd feel a lot better.

(12,187 posts)I told my wife in the moment that his "stand" would be one of the iconic moments of this period, let alone this incident. His baton seemed pitifully inadequate, didn't it? He made it adequate, but I wish they had been better armed.
Someone should provide an image of Mr. Goodman's heroism so we can share it far and wide. At the time, I thought he was fighting a rearguard action while his compadres led Congressional people away. In that moment, I didn't realize he was alone.
How many people could stand that strong, all by themselves?
