The family of a Killeen, Texas, man fatally shot by police in the front yard of his home is calling for the officer's arrest.
The shooting happened Sunday just before 5:30 p.m. when the family of Patrick Warren Sr., a Black man, called police to ask that a mental health professional be sent to the home.
Civil rights attorney Lee Merritt, who is representing the family, told NBC affiliate KCEN-TV that the family was told that a mental health deputy was not available so a police officer was sent.
The Killeen Police Department said that officer Reynaldo Contreras was sent to the home in response to a psychiatric call. When Contreras arrived he "encountered an emotionally distressed man," according to a police statement.

(10,599 posts)Maybe they'll get a civil settlement from the city, but it's Texas, so the officer won't get anything more than a paid sick leave.

(10,599 posts)Better off taking their chances with the family member having a crisis.
The odds are higher than 50/50 that something HORRIBLE will happen the second the Pork Patrol is involved.

And, why do tasers not work so often? Is that there that great a population of folks unaffected?
I think the "I tried the taser" could be an excuse, too.
Unless the video shows him employing it, I'm suspicious. My biggest concern is that the gun is option 1 with too many cops.
Our friend (2 years deceased) rose from patrolman to captain and told us only twice ever did he need to pull his sidearm during an arrest. He was a cop for 40+ years in a town of >150,000. Twice, he pulled his gun from the holster.

(77,268 posts)He spent 4 years in crisis management & his last 3 in Community Outreach.
He was the guy tipsters called, because the number on the posters transferred direct to his voicemail.
So, he was still on the street a couple days a week, all the way to the end.

(13,385 posts)You get treated like shit by cops.
It's like they want to make whatever distress you are feeling worse.
I avoid going to the hospital because the cops take you in ,
Not emt.
Not your counselor.
They made it so only cops take you in..unless you are lucky and rich enough to have a car go there without cops being involved. I don't have a car, can't afford it.
I gotta deal with asshole cops when I am suicidal,it really sucks. Being locked in a plexiglass box built into the back seat in cuffs humiliated in front of your neighbors.. yeah that'll teach me to not feel like dying.

(2,549 posts)... every problem looks like a nail. By corollary, if the only tool you have is a gun, then every problem looks like a target. The police are the absolutely last people to call for a mental health crisis.
