General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIf Joe Scarborough is just propaganda for the GOP then why do so many here watch and repeat
his lies?
One thread after another with RW talking points right in the titles:
"Obama voters depressed"
"Obama voters flock to Mitt"
We reject these messages but we are accepting the frame (?)

(12,437 posts)I for one watch other media choices.... if I watch Morning Joe...it's about 5 minutes max. I will watch to hear a good commentator like Howard Dean for example.
Otherwise...nope. Additionally, I would not be seen wanting to post----spew Joe's propaganda here on DU ....feels inflammatory.

(36,418 posts)Good question. Maybe, because the rest of the morning shows on the other networks are even more reactionary? I don't watch TV and I don't drink before 4.

(7,006 posts)Did you hear fan boy and girl Ed Schultz/Rachel Maddow "analysis" of President Obama debate performance last week? For a moment, I swear I thought I was watching Faux News instead of MSNBC. ALL OF THE CORPORATE OWNED/RATINGS DRIVEN MEDIA spin the story to what THEY WANT you to believe. Period.
Propaganda Definition- is a form of communication that is aimed at influencing the attitude of a community toward some cause or position by presenting only one side of an argument. Propaganda is usually repeated and dispersed over a wide variety of media in order to create the chosen result in audience attitudes.
And we're so much into our "but where better than third-world counties" thinking in the USA to believe it doesn't happen here right at home.
As if.
Keep enjoying MSNBC, CBS, ABC, CNN and more while they feed you B.S. That's exactly what they want:
Ratings + Advertising = More $$ for the top 5% and the Pundits they pay to feed you the B.S. they call news.

(13,620 posts)an everybody gets it sort of way. The "Nappy Headed Ho's" thing was out of line but that was instigated by Bernard. I think they should have accepted Imus's apology, fired Bernard and let it go.
I don't watch Scabwhoreoh much.

(14,549 posts)but when it comes here and becomes something akin to:
'Joe Scab thinks we beat our wives too often' -- then the frame is being accepted and repeated.

(32,088 posts)Do they think everyone here is like Drew Barrymore's character in "My 50 First Dates", where we have short-term amnesia and need to be reminded every day? Half this guy's ratings have got to be coming from people who watch only to report to DU on whatever he spews. Maybe if they all just stopped watching, his ratings would drop to where it wasn't worth it for MSNBC to keep him on the air.

(3,586 posts)I have often wanted to post a thread asking people to stop with the ubiquitous Morning Joe threads, but I didn't want to call out DUers.
Even though the thread titles almost always contain an insult (Morning Joke, Joe Scab, etc.), they are tantamount to advertisements.
Threads that say "watch Tweety destroy right wing hack so-and-so" or "turn on Rachel right now- she's discussing X" are one thing. I generally appreciate them.
But Joe Scarborough simply cannot be saying that many interesting things on a daily basis to justify the number of threads on DU that are devoted to his show.
KurtNYC
(14,549 posts)but I think accepting the way the RW frames an issue will doom any productive or informative discussion of that issue. And it can be very hard to talk about the content of a RW show without repeating and embedding the way they frame issues.
It is very much like that meta study last month about organics -- the frame they created was 'organic is not more nutritious and therefore not worth paying extra for' If one launched a discussion from that one would have a hard time moving the whole thing over to the idea that people buy organic to avoid pesticides, NOT because they believe it to be more nutritious.
The Right is very disciplined in their use of issue frames. We say pro-choice, they say pro-life -- 2 different frames, each of which is largely rejected by the respective opposing side.

(41 posts)One might also ask why a country (america) that had a decent middle-class economy just gave everything away to a bunch of really ignorant right wingers over the past 30 years.
I mean it's not like america was economically defeated by a bunch of geniuses that came up with a brilliant plan.
They have been screwed over by the dumbest of the dumb (right wingers).
You think americans can face a question like that and come up with an honest answer ?

(6,960 posts)So ... it is better that we have no idea what the opposition is saying, arguing, charging, plotting?
My goodness, I listen to a little to Bill Bennet, check-out Drudge, take a gander at WorldNetDaily, sometimes catch Michael Medved --- I know what the Repuglican propaganda machine is saying.
It is rational and realistic to pay attention to your foe so that you can argue and persuade against them effectively.
Maybe if Pres. Obama had been directly exposed to some of the viciousness of the Obama-bashing, he would have understood what to expect at the first debate (instead of just getting it all from handlers and briefing books).
I appreciate DUers that take the time to post what a guy like Scarborough is saying.

(14,549 posts)it is like the old saying about how there is no such thing as bad publicity.
Only actions truly demand opposition:
"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." (Edmund Burke)
To me the important word there is "do."

I check in with Joe occasionally and when my blood pressure starts to spike, I know it's time to step away from the TV. Once in a while Joe has a guest who can actually push back against his standard crap he brews up day after day. Today was a typical one where Joe gets on a rant about such nonsense as this: "A lot of his Democratic friends are telling him that for the first time they are thinking of voting for the Republican." Uh, yea, if anyone actually believes that --- 1. He has ANY friends, much less Democratic friends, I have some swampland for sale. And 2. The day that a Democrat jumps ship from their candidate to embrace a Republican candidate like Mittster will be the day the earth stands still. It ain't happenin' any more than Romney's base will jump to Obama after his 47 % gaffe. Stay home, not vote? That I'll buy. But going for the other guy? Oh, puh-leaze.
Joe has to do what he does because he is a politician turned TV personality. He has to keep things churned up. That's his shtick. But does anyone take him seriously? I certainly hope not. DUers who tune in need to know it's his thing. It's what he does. It does NOT make it true. He just likes to throw stuff out there to get people stirred up. Relax and know he is not some guru who knows of what he speaks. No matter how much he would have you think he is.

(71,611 posts)Joe is an arrested development frat boy ... narcissism and mental sloth. The daily morality play is "Let's Abuse The Girl" ... and Mika plays the doormat. Harold Ford Jr. has to wipe off his chin after every camera cut-away. He's THE most disgusting pimp for the reich wing on TV.
The attitude of self-indulged sophomoric "punditry" is pure comedy ... where the 'depth' of their ANALysis is less than the morning dew.
Three hours of cable TV that's nothing but a GOP infomercial.

(34,845 posts)As you've posted elsewhere in this thread, we give them more power over us if we argue over the issues THEY want us to argue about.
Especially if it's something Joe Scarborough says. He doesn't have much of interest to say so we should ignore him and keep talking about the issues that DO matter.
