If they believe they can continue the lies and pretend they can go forward as if nothing ever happened, I think they are terribly misguided.
It appears that is exactly what they plan on doing? How else do they keep the base?
The election was not a "fraud", contrary to what Trump and his accomplices say. It was one of the safest secure elections in history, mostly because of the paper trail left behind, mostly because of external events like the pandemic.
For Senators or Congressmen to suggest otherwise is to declare their own elections as illegitimate. They were on the same ballot.
Republicans cannot be permitted to continue to campaign on a lie. They cannot ignore it or try to sweep it under the rug. The lie must be cleared up if they are to continue campaigns as credible people.

they risk losing the base. But if they persist in the lie, theyre telling that base that theres no point in voting for them, because elections are rigged and their votes wont count.

This sounds good on the surface, but is a fallacious appeal to consequences argument.
Or, in other words, we did the crime but can't do the time. This dismisses the fact that impeachment is their constitutional obligation, not something that you weight the pros and cons of in this way.
