Yeah that's right, The President has been ahead 99% of the time since January.
He will be re-elected. And will hopefully hold the Senate and coattail the House.
You can return to your security blankets now.

(63,912 posts)Kerry and GWB debated the first time. Bush was a blithering idiot. Even I was embarrassed for him, that he would be so bad. I remember thinking at the time that it was OBVIOUS that Bush would lose.
I thought Obama was too low-energy and that Mitt was all lit up. Obama has a day job and Mitt is unemployed, so it made a certain amount of sense that Obama could indeed be subdued. But I seriously doubt that Mitt can sustain the attack. He's just too out of touch with any reality but that of his own making. He was giving a performance the other night. He was acting. But I predict he will wilt next week and we'll be back to the status quo ante.

The president is awesome and doing great and won the debate and it was all part of a strategy so STOP SAYING THAT!

(10,624 posts)I do expect the President to do much better in the remaining debates, and I also expect those trendlines to reverse or to at least stabilize.
But Jeepers Creepers! That chart looks awful. Like when my Georgia Bulldogs are leading 35-0 at the half, only to have the other team score 28 unanswered points in the third quarter. Hard to feel good about that.

(4,610 posts)There was no explination as to WHY....A few times I saw a tiny smile appear. A twinkle in his eye....And I knew all was going to be alright....I wavered a time or two, got a littly jumpy, but feel Obama knew and knows what he is doing. Even with the new gray hairs....It is Obama all the way....

(5,342 posts)I watched the debate and felt that what stood out the most was the pack of lies that was being told by Romney, I was astounded at the level of disregard for the truth. I saw a man who was abrasive, rude, and aggressive. Are lies and bad manners signs of a successful debate? Not in my book. And then I read and heard comments by some who have a voice in print and television and thought how dramatic they were being. Think about it for a minute - what if those who have a voice in the media had focused on those huge lies Romney told and not a 'lackluster' performance?
I will take Mr. Lackluster over Sir Liesalot any day.
I've been away a while and don't remember you being like this. Then again, I must have been looking at you through my Rose-colored glasses.
(And I'm proud of DUers for not riding that loud 'so disappointing' bandwagon, I feel it's why we stand out from Republicans)

(154,021 posts)it was following the damn historic trend!
Incumbents almost never 1 out of 7, do well on first debates.
That is not rose colored, that is history.
Why they never do well, one commenter on Current hit nail on head... POTUS are not used to hearing contrary opinions, so they need the smackdown.

state to determine where the electoral votes would go.
They've been pretty much accurate since 2004.

(2,424 posts)This is the only reason he is stronger.
Not from his debate performance, but because he adopted a more moderate position.
Many folks here just don't seem to get that. Romney didn't put up a great debate performance. He alleviated many fears of moderate Republicans and right leaning independents.
The biggest political mistake Romney made was choosing an extremist like Ryan for his running mate.
The best possible campaign strategy for President Obama:
Ryan is one heart beat away from the Presidency.

(2,983 posts)I'm looking... still looking... it's still looking far too close for my liking. I just have a hard time imagining how anyone with any common sense could vote for a sneering plutocrat like Mitt Romney.
Yes, he (Obama) will probably be re-elected, but not if we don't go out and vote for him, not if we don't campaign and struggle to move forward. It's still going to take a lot of work - and the potential for abuse of the system, for outright fraud... is very high.
I'll return to my security blanket only after the election is over.

(1,819 posts)Why does 1 debate matter so much?
Is real life a debate? No. Real life is in the doing. You are judged on your words and your actions.
If you lie, it should matter.
If you rip companies to shred and send jobs overseas, it should matter.
When you bully a kid, while you are a kid, it matters.
If you say something and then change your mind repeatedly, it should matter.
If a state where you were Gov., can't stand you, it should matter.
If you loved healthcare so much you passed a bill and then you denigrate the same plan, it should matter.
if you state that 47% of this country is not worthy to be represented by you, it should matter.
If you go to Europe, our allies and speak like a fool, it should matter.
If you are a multimillionaire and have offshore accounts and will not release more then 1 year of income tax filings, it should matter.
That you do not keep your money in the US, that you keep it offshore, should matter.
It matters. lies matter. Telling different facts to different groups of people matters.
This election matters.

I would like to see this analysis state-by-state for the 'battleground' states.
And in any case, I'm not going to un-pucker my asshole and relax till the election is over, because given the options, this race is ENTIRELY too close.

(10,479 posts)we should feel about anything. They have placed so much of their money-raising efforts on making us feel they know everything. The pundits are on their payrolls and follow through. They feel so superior than the rest of us it show on their faces and their remarks about this debate. Pres. Obama did not fail. He let Romney keep on being a blowhard who didn't even take the time for breathing during his staged performance. And people like Cilliza, Chuck Toad, David Gregory, etc have forked tongues and will say anything or do anything for their own prominence regardless of the truth. It is all a game to them.

(22 posts)First post.......... HI DU.
You know... i felt bewildered watching the debate, but afterwards I started to think there must have been SOME strategy to it. Looking back at Obama's campaign before they were always one step ahead (or more) and always played this game of chess like they were naturals. I think they knew what they were doing... Here's why:
They knew Mitt had to come back to center to go after independents (FLIPFLOP). They knew Mittens had to give a STRONG performance and that he'd probably come across cocky and forceful (smacking down the moderator, I want blood kind of staring). They knew he'd probably come out with stretches, half-truths and lies regarding Obama's record and the current trajectory of the country. Not to mention trying to separate himself from... himself...
Obama didn't go on the attack because they didn't want Mitt on the defensive (YET). They wanted Mitt to come out, be cocky and overly confident and say ANYTHING that came to him. They didn't want him trying to defend his 47% remark (YET - that's an indefensible gimme). They wanted even more ammo to use against him in later debates and ads and THEY GOT IT. Mitt has done nothing but dig a huge hole with even more flipping, flopping, lying, stretching and now they probably have enough ammunition to last until Nov. Watch for several teeth smashing uppercuts to come from the Obama corner SOON.
I half way expect the Biden/Rand debate to go the same way. If it does then I think I'm probably right - or maybe I'm just being hopeful.
Here's to ya.
