I know some think they could vote on him never holding office again, but that seems debatable. Besides, trump will never win another election for any meaningful office.

and we should hope that you are right about how he'd never be able to do that anyhow, but....
as I understand it he would lose all of the "ex-president" benefits.

and that’s the only real impact if the trial is later. House would accomplish more by impeaching him again on Monday for other vile acts.

I think McConnell wants to insure that Trump will not have a stronghold on the Republican Party in the future. He's got one shot - find Trump guilty.
