https://www.businessinsider.com/parler-shared-information-fbi-capitol-riot-suspect-2021-1 Parler is sharing information with the FBI on federal investigations into the Capitol riot.
An FBI affidavit shows that Parler gave information that helped FBI agents identify and locate a Proud Boys supporter arrested on suspicion of making threats on Parler.
Tech companies typically help law-enforcement agencies with these types of requests. But the cooperation could have unusually significant consequences for Parler users who organized violence at the Capitol on January 6.
An affidavit from an FBI special agent filed in court Tuesday says Eduardo Florea stockpiled more than 1,000 rounds of ammo and threatened to kill Sen.-elect Raphael Warnock of Georgia.
The affidavit says the FBI received records from Parler to identify the user behind the account "LoneWolfWar," where the threats originated. Parler provided the phone number associated with the account, the affidavit says, and the FBI used it, and info from T-Mobile, to identify Florea.

(5,306 posts)I would think the vast majority of the career rank and file are still there. They've seen what has happened and have been "hunkering down", so to speak, protecting themselves and their careers against the trump assault. Now that trump is almost gone, they are free to launch a counter attack. Fueled by four years of rage built up as trump tried to destroy the Department they love, they will be more motivated than ever before.
I'm also thinking that as investigators, they've seen a lot of questionable activities by trump's appointees, and instead of speaking up, they've been taking notes and taking names. A lot of heavy shit my be about to hit the fan.
One can only hope.

(17,199 posts)I expect the full un-redacted Mueller Report will see the light of day shortly after Biden takes over.
And will probably be a footnote in the news after the pandemic and trump's daily musings.

(18,624 posts)We know that in order to be an agent, one has to have a stick up one's ass the size of the flag pole Trumpers used to beat cops with. Even more than that of a State Patrolman.
The great majority are serious enough about that oath that their own mothers have to walk the straight and narrow.
It would be impossible to pass the word down the ranks that agents have a new master they have to obey and excuse at all costs.

(45,427 posts)Wray has contradicted Trump on voter fraud and more, so it shouldn't be a problem for Biden to keep him as FBI director. If he becomes a problem, he can be fired and replaced.
Garland will definitely prosecute and actually seek justice again, unlike Barr. He has experience with this.

(5,306 posts)I bet Garland hasn't forgotten that he should sitting on the Supreme Court instead of Neil Gorsuch. Garland will have no sympathy for the Republicans and I think he will quietly grind his ax without them even knowing the wheel is turning.

(5,155 posts)CULTURE is not recorded conversations, signed documents and ceremonies. It's a tacit acceptance of norms and where one draws the line. It's an acceptance of who one can trust and who should be suspected. In an organization whose structure involves partners and close working teams, we must remain vigilant.
I don't believe that 4 years of Trump "loyalty" appointments and hires, working with other branches of "loyalty tested" of DOJ, etc... that there could be any greater "neutrality" in the FBI today than in 2016 when it was called "Trumpland".
Off the top of my head I remember reading how in 2016, Comey felt alienated in the FBI for failing to push the investigations into the Clintons based upon the Steve Bannon project "Clinton Cash" which was basically a list of the donors to the Clinton Foundation and drawing Glenn Beck whiteboard connections.
I remember reading how Comey would walk down the halls of the FBI building, feeling alone. That's the effect of culture.
I'm absolutely sure that his biased enforcement and breaking of clear DOJ rules, his covering up the investigation into Trump's campaign and his 11th hour announcements of Wiener's laptop (which had been in-hand for weeks, and should have taken an afternoon to have checked and NEVER ONCE FOUND ANYTHING)...
...and then Comey was only too happy to have fucking Trump kiss him on the cheek only to have been repelled by Trump's true nature. Unfortunately, Comey was a 'traditional' Republican and not a 'mob' Republican who would surely use him up and spit him out...
...and I STILL haven't forgotten the "mysterious" 11th hour timing of the FBI's otherwise dormant Twitter feed suddenly springing to life with tweets about Clinton investigations... https://www.vice.com/en/article/nek55w/a-technical-malfunction-made-an-fbi-twitter-account-seem-anti-clinton-in-the-final-days-of-the-election

(9,760 posts)the FBI might have set up Parler as a trap for RWers. I'd be very happy to be proven wrong, but I'd be shocked to find that they don't lean more toward being RWers themselves.

(2,733 posts)differing points of view, like when the Fairness Doctrine was in effect still.
Boycotting would be great if we could control it and make it happen. But requiring all our media to have public interest obligations seems do-able. It'd take a BIG new Communications Act, and a different justification than 1934 when it was limited airwaves.
How about preserving democracy by not allowing one-sided presentations?

(25,111 posts)assurance from top justice officials along with republican congress as well as social media that their hatred and planned violence against the USA would not become known? That their identities would not be exposed?
I am mean look at the republican congress giving a tour of the Capitol Building a day before the terrorist attack. Look at republican senate and house trying to overturn the election constantly spewing outright lies. I wonder did they believe that the coup would work?
This is beyond logic.

(8,755 posts)From the article:
It's not clear whether Parler handed over the account information to the FBI after the Department of Justice issued a warrant or subpoena for it or whether the company gave the information over of its own accord.
Also their hosting provider, Amazon could be, and by many media accounts is, assisting. Additionally there are the reports of white hat hackers archiving all of Parler just before it was shut down by Amazon.
The FBI, of course, is not going to say, at this time, the source of the evidence it is acting on.

Be funny if the entire thing was an FBI set up from the start. But more likely just a Russian disinformation campaign to destabilize the US.
Best thing that CEO could do is cooperate fully with the FBI. I think he was used by Russian intelligence.

(639 posts)These right wingers think that they have 100% complete privacy and that they can conspire online without getting caught.
Like a bar or restaurant, the 'online chat/messaging' companies can refuse service to anyone for any reason.
I hope the FBI can discover the individuals, who have been conspiring online and take them all down.
I, myself, respect a company that offers me a service, like chat/messaging. I appreciate their efforts to provide me with these kinds of services. It helps us all communicate with others; mainly family & friends in a safe, easy method.
To assume you have some unlimited right to do whatever you want, wherever you are and with anybody you want is not only naive, it's being proven to be quite dangerous for many.
Cheers to the FBI, CIA, Apple, Google and Amazon for making sure we have these services and that we are all protected with the full assistance of our government's security agencies from the insidious trouble makers that is the Republican party.

(314 posts)I created an account on Parler--you don't give SSN or DL unless you want to be a "verified" account, which I did not. I started responding to posts about three weeks before they went dark.
I had a fabulous time dropping truth bombs on their pointy heads. I avoided profanity and name-calling, since that seemed counter-productive. Instead I shared inconvenient truths to confound them. Sure, I received threatening, profanity-filled responses, but I usually didn't read them. I wasn't there to get in fights with people unable to form a proper sentence. Occasionally, I would compliment them on their scintillating MAGA repartee or correct their grammar, but mostly I ignored/laughed at their libtard-laced responses.
There were many other resisters there doing similar work. I miss it. Gab and CloutHub are impossible to use and I prefer to avoid MAGA on Twitter. So, for the time being, I've retired my Big Stick of Tough Love, as I liked to call it.
