For areas of the country with concentration of a certain religion can have certain days locally. Christmas, though religious to many is a secular holiday.

(17,194 posts)I suggest "Love Your Billionaire Day."
On that day, there will be parades with giant balloon likenesses of Donald Trump, Jack Welch, et.al. Attendance at these parades will, of course, be mandatory, and attendance will be taken.
The grateful peons will also chip in to buy their favorite CEO a fitting present. The committee recommends that you contribute no more than 15% of your annual salary, but the more love you show your CEO, the better for your continued employment. The minimum contribution has been set by the holiday committee at 12%. To make it easier, automatic payroll deductions will automaticcally be set up.
At the end of the day, all peons will contribute a covered dish to serve at the Great Feast of the One Percent. Once again, attendance is mandatory. Virgins are optional. The Feast will begin no earlier than 9 PM, for a duration of not less than five hours.
Note: All are expected to be at work bright and early the next day for the ritual Kissing of the Ass. Lateness will be cause for immediate termination.

(1,326 posts)They were open 365 days a year. The corporate overlords felt that having even one set day off a year would disrupt the "love" the customers had for them, they thought customers would go irate if God forbid they were unable to rent a movie one day a year. So yes, I worked many a Christmas Day there. Which actually wasn't that bad- getting paid time and a half to sit there and watch DVD's or play video games all day, and ring up the 5 people who would actually come in that day. Still agitated me that they expected us to work as many holidays as we could though, and we never even had one we could know for sure that we'd have off.

Then why do immigrants continue to flock here? To colonize us?
What the fuck is this thread meant to do? Simply bait us all? Then why not go bait some folks your own size? Why not go post it on FR and get their opinion. I am sure that on this issue they can deliver a smackdown better than most of us at DU. Because the difference is that there, they don't want any immigrants. You believe you can change America to your liking. Apparently a place where you get to decide what holidays Americans may celebrate, and you get to decide how much vacation time we can have. And you get to do this while insisting all the while that you find the idea of our shared culture somehow not worth as much as the amount of work you could get done by getting rid of pleasures that distract workers and reduce profits.
Are you here to enslave? Or to outsource? Because you sound like someone who yearns for an America where workers are more like those in the old country who work long hours for nearly nothing without complaint and make their overseers rich.

(4,033 posts)The following are the 10 Federal Holidays. I want & need them. I also would like to have Massachusetts's Patriot Day. There has been a diminishing of the "celebration" of Holidays over the past few decades. I'm sure there are a lot here at DU, who remember the anticipation of an upcoming Holiday. We knew that one if not both our parents would have the day off. I remember for Thanksgiving, my Dad would get the car gassed up on Wednesday, because all the stations would be closed for a long week-end. Stores were closed. This was at a time when industry ran 3 shifts, but stores were closed. There wasn't the "idea" that the store might lose 1 customer because they were closed. On the eve of a Holiday most businesses closed early.
I had a part time job once, at a retail outlet. On Christmas Eve, the store closed at 9 p.m. My thought is, if you don't have what you want and or need by 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve, well I'm sorry for your inability to plan. I've taught, and I seethed that we worked on Veterans Day, (I'm the daughter of a Marine Corps Veteran (15 years), who was also a Korean War Veteran. I would schedule a personal day for November 11.
I would like one national company on a Holiday, to post the following: "In honor of the Holiday, and in order for our employees to be with their families, our business is closed." When I learned that Buca di Peppo (sp) was open 365 days a year, I won't eat there any more.

(534 posts)Nearly every other democracy on the friggin' planet makes election day a holiday, so that people can go and vote without impact from work, and so that children can participate in the democratic experience rather than being in school all day. I'd gladly give up Columbus Day for it - always felt that one was a pretty vile day, or Washington's Birthday.
The only reason that Election Day ISN'T a holiday is because the Republicans are deathly afraid that people would actually come out to the polls and vote if there was a day set aside for the purpose, and they are adamantly opposed to letting that happen.

Plus 6 weeks of PAID vacation a year.
National Holidays -
Labor Day - Most important
May Day
Election Day - And extend it over the Monday so that more folks get a chance to vote.
Christmas Eve
Christmas Day
The week between Christmas and New Year's
New Year's Day
Rosh Hoshannah
Easter/Zombie Day
Good Friday/Make a Zombie Day
Memorial Day
Washington's Birthday
Franklin's Birthday
Jefferson's Birthday
Lincoln's Birthday
MLK's Birthday
FDR's Birthday
JFK's Birthday
Armistice Day
Yom Kippur

And Bastille Day in honor of the French contribution to our revolution
Canada Day
Thanksgiving and the day after
Plus it's time to get rid of the 24/7 notion - Open shops at 10 or 11A and close later so people can shop after work plus close for two hours at lunch. Have stores do staggered hours so that the people who work in shops can find time to do their shopping.

(1,235 posts)Despite the fact that a lot of businesses remain open on "holidays" (what, never worked in the service industry?), that list seems pretty arbitrary as far as holiday themes go.
In fact, I'd love to add a few holidays a year where retail/restaurants/other service businesses are required to close with pay for workers and other business can keep on trucking. 9-5er's can suck it.

(47,675 posts)The extra prep time would be nice.
Thanksgiving is good because it's a four-day weekend involving food. New Years Day is good because everyone's fucking hung over. Screw Columbus Day. The 4th is a good excuse to drink a lot of beer and play with explosives that can blow your head off - guy stuff, ya know. Easter Monday means you have time to make egg salad. Valentines Day AND the day afterward should be holidays for obvious reasons. August needs one just because, well, it doesn't have one - Dry Grass day or something.
And on TOP of all of that, companies are doing whatever they can to cut paid time off. Perhaps we need MORE holidays for that reason alone. Vacation and personal time are dwindling with time. Those few days that are granted without question are valuable and even they are evaporating. My wife had a "professional development day" instead of the day off today (seminar bullshit). The liquor stores were even open. I don't agree with the concept of "Columbus Day", but if it's a fucking holiday, make it a fucking holiday. I'd like a name change though.
As for Christmas, the whole week before New Year's Day should be a freebee. Nothing gets done then anyway because everyone's wasted on eggnog (well, I am at least). When I worked for a NASA contractor, there was a six-week window where NOTHING got done. Everything needed someone to approve actions and nobody was around to approve them because they all had extended vacations - both in our company AND at Goddard. And yes, we just got loaded on eggnog all day (one of the guys had a killer mix - the jug marked "X" and the one marked "XXX" . There weren't many of us around so we all got loaded - but paid for it.

(47,675 posts)One year, when mine still did the Trick-or-Treat thing, I dressed as a wizard and had a small high-intensity flashlight in my left hand (staff in the right). That particular year, about half of the street lights were near their deathbeds. Because of the way halogen lights work, a few photons at the right frequency will provide enough excitement to fire them back up for a few minutes. All I'd do is wave the beam over the bulbs with the right oscillation and they'd "magically" come on. The neighborhood kids totally freaked out when I did it. It also helped keep the street brighter.
Perhaps word got out, but the township replaced all of the malfunctioning bulbs before Christmas of that year. It might help that the township manager lives in our neighborhood.
