(2,636 posts)Last year, my husband and I had one day in DC due to airport closing an dflight reroutings as we returned to bury his mother in Iowa.
I walked across that bridge on the left of the Lincoln Memorial from Arlington to our Capitol with tears then tht froze to my cheeks because it was 30°.
We walked into the Lincoln Memorial. Groups of people scattered about. Taking pictures, quiet, somber, as it was a holy kind of place. I stood where MLK stood. I looked out over the Mall to the Washington Monument, and i was struck then by how magnificent an how peaceful this place was.
People protest, abortion I think. Peacefully.
I watched the Insurrection unfold live.
I am again, proud to be American, despite the shameful events of January 6.

(55,334 posts)We're still in for the worst of the pandemic. Half the people who've got sick with Covid have done so only since the election. That's what a "rapidly accelerating rate of infection" looks like. Fortunately medical teams have reduced the disease's mortality rate, but that also means we're increasing the long-term disabled rate among those who catch it.
I have a friend who caught it in April--super healthy yoga nut--and she still hasn't got her taste buds back. So yeah, given most of the experts are saying we're at about the halfway point in this crisis and Trump's managed to fuck up the supply train on his way out the door--his one final fuck you to America--I think a memorial tribute to the fallen is jumping the gun.

(567 posts)Lost my husband to Covid in August after he'd spent 3 months in a nursing home under quarantine. We were unable to be with him when he died. I know there are countless others with similar stories. I weep for them too. This was the memorial we didn't get to have. I thank God that Biden will be in charge tomorrow.

(53,410 posts)Im so sorry you lost your husband.
I lost my son a few years ago and like Biden says it is always with you, so it isnt hard to know your pain and want to hug you.
He should have had you and his family with him. All of the people who have or will succumb to COVID should have had their loved ones there. But if a nurse was there then they didnt die alone. There was an angel with them.

My favorite part was when Biden expressed his thanks to the young nurse. You hear him and you know this is a man who has sat his share of hospital vigils.
I have my candle burning in the window this night. Just a gesture, perhaps? Who will see it? Well, as the Yiddish proverb goes:
"It is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness. "
So, tonight, instead of cursing the horrible ideas that brought us T***p, I will look to that small flame and have hope.
