"Austin, TX Today, the Texas Democratic Party announced the details of our new innovative Voter Protection program in partnership with Stacey Abrams Fair Fight Action. The program will be the largest in Texas history and make it easiernot harderfor Texans to vote.
Texas Republicans have made it harder to vote at every turn, by implementing restrictive voting policies such as voter ID restrictions, shortening the days of early voting, closing polling locations, and attempting to purge lawful Texans from the voting rolls. Texas Democrats are already fighting back. In addition to filing three separate lawsuits fighting back against various Republican attempts to make it harder for Texans to vote, this month the Texas Democratic Party launched our voter assistance hotline 1-844-TX-VOTES.
Now, with the help of Stacey Abrams Fair Fight Action, the Texas Democratic Party is taking our voter protection efforts even further. In partnership with Fair Fight Action, the Texas Democratic Partys new, groundbreaking voter protection program will include:..."
More detail on the article. This was released on Jan 6 so not sure if this has already been posted.
Great news for Texan Dems nonetheless

(22,280 posts)instead we made it possible to vote at over 300 locations on Election Day. All of the big Metro counties in Texas have this now and it is awesome. I think about half of our counties are doing this now.
One of the conditions when the County Commissioners voted to do it was that no changes were to be made regarding voting centers until at least 2021, in order to study turnout at each location.
If a location has very low turnout and a nearby one has heavier turnout, those 2 might be combined and set up in the building with the best layout.
Since we can vote anywhere, merging low turnout locations is not on the same level as what has been done in other states. Also our voting locations for Election Day are very widely distributed and accessible.
There are 10 locations within 10 minutes of my house.
I want to get drop boxes at the Courthouses at least, and no excuse absentee voting.

(5,128 posts)She working with Beto, oh my goodness!!
Gov. Abbott be afraid. Cruz, run! Paxton, well maybe someday you'll face justice! Dan Patrick, get a bad case of Covid. (sorry, i don't mean to be evil)
And well all the rest of the Republicans, Gohmert comes 1st to mind, but there are so many more.
It us going to be a very tough fight. But I still hold hope that good will overcome.
Just like in Georgia, we can do it. The extremists must be crushed. We've been dealing with them and letting it go for far too long. In 2003-4 they called themselves the "Protest Warriors".

The Texas landscape is littered with people who did what he did and are in jail, lost licenses, can't do anything but clerk in stores or be criminals. Oil and gas don't you know.....
He violated SEC rules. He broke them.

(938 posts)Unfortunately we are still almost completely dominated by the GOP at the state level, and there will be more election cycles than we hoped before Texas will turn reliably blue, but organizations like this can accelerate the process.

(584 posts)...she was offered to head the DNC, but made the choice to go this way. Something people need to take into account is although black voters were the big story in Georgia, Latinos and Asian-American/Pacific Islanders voted in Georgia in bigger numbers than they ever have, and they voted Democratic. If Latinos turn out for Democrats in Texas as they did in Georgia a Republican stands no chance of winning a statewide race in Texas.
The other part of it is the money needed is going to make the Georgia campaign money look like spare change in the piggy bank.

(31,261 posts)Governor. And an excellent one I believe she would be. The woman has an impressive political resume and is still young. People know about her 2018 Governor race and the work that she has done on voting rights in Georgia, but she was a very young and influential Georgia House Minority Leader, the leader of all Democrats in the Georgia House.

After Abrams had helped Democrats there win the Presidency and two US Senate seats, one freeper said something like maybe we should have let her win Governor, then she would have been so busy with Covid that she could not help Democrats win.
I am sure that Texas republicans are having major digestive problems now that she will be working that state, she is so much smarter than they are.

(31,261 posts)One reason why Florida Cubans are so hard republican is because of the Bay of Pigs, republicans took advantage of that debacle and painted Democrats as the bad guys. If Biden does a good job resolving Venezuelan immigration issue, we pick up that group, which in Florida can help us develop a counter-weight to Cubans (although very young Cubans are voting more democratic).

Can't wait to hear the GOP's reaction to the news that Abrams is bringing her Fair Fight organization to their own neighborhood.
Better watch out, boys. This is a woman who takes no prisoners.

(5,128 posts)Long read but so good. Excerpted below.
Onstage, DeBeauvoir found her bearings and then turned up the heat. She wanted the computer scientists to know what the past decade had been like for her. She was tired of seeing clerks vilified by electronic voting critics who made broad sweeping statementsattacks that denigrated not just machines but the people who administered them. Every year the broadsides continued, without any advice to those of us who are in the field. She accused the academics of doing little to quell the conspiracy theories their research tended to spawn, meaning that academic papers and internet rumors were often given equal weight in the public discourse. All this while she toiled endlessly just to convince citizens and politicians that elections were fair.
DeBeauvoir was practically seething, and the audience shifted nervously. Then, out of nowhere, she changed tack. Lately, DeBeauvoir confessed, she'd begun to see things from their perspective. Once upon a time, the specter of malware and advanced persistent threats felt like science fiction. Now she'd come to understand that the scientists had felt ignored as much as she had. For the first time, a room of computer experts heard sounds of real sympathy from the mouth of an elections official. For you, I imagine it feltas we would say in Texaslike hollerin' down a well, DeBeauvoir said. Today, she wanted the scientists to know how much this country needs your wisdom, your knowledge of scienceand help.
She had come to the conference with one purpose: to invite the computer scientists to design a new voting system entirely from scratch. It would have a paper trail, an easy-to-use interface, and the greatest security conceivable. And, she declared, The. Source. Code. Must. Be. Open.
