(55,334 posts)but the "Nazification of the Republican Party" wouldn't be inaccurate. We could also go with "the Age of Lies" or the Great Turning.
Given what Trump has left us with, this may be the decade when the long-predicted ending of American international hegemony finally turned gradually away from global leadership and toward being "first among equals" among the liberal democracies.
Of course a LOT of that depends on who replaces Merkel in Germany and whether Macron bounces back (or is replaced by someone who can partner with Germany to make Europe a global influencer). There's a power vacuum in the west cause of Trump, and both Britain and Japan are too shy to step up.
Between the Trump Debacle (how's that for a chrononym?) and the Covid crisis, the ebbing of Western leadership has been accelerated. If you think things are bad in 1st world-3rd world relationships, wait till you see how in the next couple of years Africa and South-Ocean-rim Asian countries react to the wealthy nations hogging all the vaccine supplies. We're at a Great Turning in history. Trump was an accelerant (as is the pandemic), but probably not a catalyst.

(18,272 posts)In due time, the name Trump will be considered an malediction. According to historian Douglas Brinkley, Trump will be thought of the same way as Benedict Arnold, so the Trump Era will be seen as a black spot in American history.

(58 posts)Because the insurrection was swept away like a trailer park in Alabama. And trust me. I live in Alabama and I've seen what tornadoes will do to trailers. I saw a whole one in a tree.
Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
