2. How exactly is a secret pardon supposed to work?

Do they just pull it out like a "Get Out of Jail Free" card in Monopoly? If they are brought in for questioning can they "Plead the 5th" without revealing the existence of the secret pardon? It was my understanding that once pardoned, there can be no self-incrimination, so that is not an option that is available, and refusal to answer questions would constitute an Obstruction of Justice charge.

but I think I've either heard or read that the DOJ is the actual holder of the official pardon list and that it's up to the President to release any names that he chooses that are on the list.

So a pardon may very well have been issued, it just wasn't publicized.
