I keep having visions of Pompeo figuring out a way to succeed. If something did happen to Biden and Harris, I would expect Pompeo to contest the law moving succession to the Legislative branch.

Jeh Johnson (Homeland Security Secretary) was Obama's pick as designated survivor leading up to Trump's Inauguration, and Trump designated Orrin Hatch (Senate Pro Tempore) was to be his once he took the oath of office.

Robert Gates (Secretary of Defense) was the designated survivor during Obama's first inauguration because Obama had decided to retain him as Secretary of Defense from Bush's administration.
