(638 posts)My dad used to sing that song in his performances and so it has extra special meaning to me. And President Obama sang it after the senseless slaughter at the church in South Carolina.

(5,339 posts)How many more times are we going to hear that song this week? I cast my vote for less religious imagery in a secular event.

(11,949 posts)Joe is a devoted Christian. And most Americans are Christians as well. Perhaps before I die that will change. But I doubt it. Regardless its a big part of my culture even though Im not a believer.

(5,339 posts)I sing in a semi-professional choir, and we do a fair share of religious music since the church was the prime funding agency centuries ago. I loved singing the Messiah. Amazing Grace is no Messiah, and it's just one I can't deal with for some reason.
I know Joe is a solid Catholic, and that doesn't bother me. I just wish we had to have less of a religious showing in our government functions. I'm sure it will never change, but a guy can dream.

(27,165 posts)and the music was entirely Latin. I never even heard Amazing Grace until the movie "Silkwood."
