This is a BIG DEAL.

It’s just a customary formality, but formalities can mean a lot in a democracy. What we just saw was this:

1) The highest-ranking Republican in the Senate, the odious and perpetually-malignant Senator from Kentucky, Mitch McConnell, publicly acknowledged the fact that Joe Biden is the duly-elected 46th President of the United States.

2) The highest-ranking Republican in the House, the obnoxious and perpetually-vile Representative from California, Kevin McCarthy, also publicly acknowledged the fact that Joe Biden is the duly-elected President of the United States.

That’s it. The peaceful transition of power has occurred, once again, in this great republic. The poor, deluded souls who hoped to overthrow our government have failed. There will be no violent revolution today. Instead, there was a peaceful revolution, as our founders imagined and intended.

Here’s to the USA!

And many who just had to be at the Capitol on January 6 are waiting for that inevitable knock at their door. Just as it should be.

It was poignant watching them pass through that majestic Capitol door, with the cracks left from a Trump rioter's blow visible in the middle panel.

That’s a poignant reminder of how fragile our republican form of government is, but it held ... today, at least, and I can’t help celebrating that fact.

That spoke volumes, and I'm glad it was left that way for today. I'm sure it will be repaired soon, but some visible sign of that day needed to be shown. It was symbolic that in spite of what happened two weeks ago, the peaceful Inauguration and transfer from one administration to another took place today without the tiniest issue. As it should.
