I'd like a check-in from those of yall who've been around here a while.
After 20 years, I feel like I've watched a shitload of American history flow by viewed from this website. This is one of those good days. For the 3rd time in my adult life, Democrats have come into the White House with a mandate to clean up the Republicans' latest mess.
We've got some really heavy and dark days ahead with this pandemic still picking up speed, the economy lopsided and sluggish, and lurking future crises like the national debt and climate change having been left to fester for 4 years we couldn't afford to lose.
But today's a good day. Let's celebrate. Let's look at 2022 tomorrow.

(13,291 posts)Since he has never been there before he wants to try the local cuisine and, after some research decides the quintessential dish (after baked beans) is a seafood dish made from a young cod fish.
As he gets into the taxi at the airport he asks the driver, "Where can I get scrod?"
The driver turns to look at him and replies, "You know, I have been asked that question many times and in many ways. But never before in the Past Pluperfect Subjunctive."

(3,064 posts)In the early days of DU their screwy quotes were brought up often. Nor I never hear of them here, thank God.
Guess their nutty opinions have been quaint compared to the new ones.
Do they and their "Zots" even make any news anymore?
Are they relegated to the dust bin of history?

this is more than that ... I have been so angry at the destruction for these long 4+ years that followed the demonization of Obama/Biden and Hillary ....
If I ever hear another RWNJ say Benghazi again, I will not take responsibility for my visceral reaction.

(16,992 posts)we, as Americans, can do anything. We have it in the palms of our hands to make the country a much better place. Now is the time to celebrate, but to temper that celebration with the knowledge that we have a lot of work to do.
Have a great lead in to the new administration, then let's go to work.
Salud, to you all.....may we have peace in our lifetimes.......and thank you all for keeping me sane...

i often wish we had the same policy as the UK: 6 weeks of campaigning, then have the election. i really am exhausted by the endless nature of it in the US.

(11,005 posts)Today is absolutely a day for celebration. I could barely go to sleep last night, I was so excited.
I have been smiling nonstop since I got up this morning. Except for the times when I have burst into joyful tears.
Watching President Biden and Dr. Jill Biden walking to the White House, I was blubbering like a baby.
And then I promptly went back to smiling, and I'm still doing it.

(2,521 posts)Mostly lurked since then. I had a few OPs of which I feel proud, but only a few. I remember "Ask Auntie Pinko", the "Top Ten Conservative Idiots" and "Equal Time With Bob Boudelang", which was always good for a laugh. I will be eternally grateful for Skinner, EarlG and Elad for giving us this invaluable forum to share news, opinions, strategies and support.

(13,369 posts)This account is my second account, used to be called just underground panther. Got cutoff from DU after DU was hacked during the election of asshole who shall be unamed..
Lost net access when I was homeless awhile.
Than when I got a home I was offline a while, but acessed DU via my phone.
I went to the DU gathering with my ex in DC where I met Estimated Prophet and Prophetess. As well as other DU ers.
That day was unforgettable awesome meeting of like minds and democratic people.
I arrived on DU sometime during the bush admin. Was here during shock and awe. Wrote articles for a site called unknown news when a fellow writer on unknown news invited me here. I checked it out and joined soon after. The rest is history. DU is a haven of sanity in a crazy world.
So my post count is larger than it appears
Happy anniversary DU!

(13,446 posts)Yep. I've been here a day or two. LOL! I joined in June of 2001 and I'm still here. I'm not on here much anymore--at least compared to the early days--but I'm still here. In the early days we had "Green Wars" with discussions about Greens and were they people that should be here. We also had a "hidden" or secret section of DU that was called The Underground that required a minimum number of posts and, later on, a donation to be allowed in there. We also had a long running thread in The Lounge that was about Kudzu. That thread ran for a very long time and was the source of MUCH hilarity. There was also a long running thing that everyone here was actually Will Pitt disguised as the different posters. That got it's start over at the arch rival GOP website that I still do not name here--20 years later. (The initials are FR if you need a clue!) LOL!
In the early days, DU was a haven for Democrats and liberals. There were very few safe places for folks like us to go to in 2001, and it was a very dark time for us all. DU offered that safety. The posters here did an excellent job of citing sources in the posts, and there were several folks that were well researched and quite willing to share their knowledge. Something that was a custom and quite endearing, was the practice of saying Welcome to any new poster you ran across on here. It was what you did. I'm sad that has diminished really. Our community was vibrant and kind--civility was a lot more common then. There were no mods in the early days, Earl, Skinner, and Elad were it, and when our community was growing they were able to keep up with it and do a good job.
We've lost some amazing folks over the years. Some names you may recognize, others you may not. Kephra was a friend of mine, and he's one of the losses from our community. Scott was an absolute whiz at staying on top of LBN. FifthGenDem was another friend, who is now gone. John was an amazing man and maybe one of the funnier people I've ever met in an online forum and real life. Both of those men were at my house when I hosted a DU meetup. It was amazing and wonderful to be able to meet folks in person that I'd only been able to interact with online. There was about a minute or so at first where we had to get used to the physical presence, but after that it was like getting together with old friends. Quite a remarkable experience. I've been lucky enough to meet other DUers in the flesh and every time it was a good experience.
Things are not at all as they were back then but our world is not the same either. If DU wants to stay relevant it will, and we'll have another 20 years together.
Love to you all!
Laura

...of being sick and tired. I don't think I've fully absorbed what happened yesterday yet so please forgive this little rant. After 20 years coming to DU, starting with the Florida fiasco in 2000 (I'm a Floridian) it's just all been such a roller coaster. God, I need some wine.
So OMG YES, I'm fed up with the Democrats getting stuck with cleaning up the results of their catastrophic policies. I'm sick of their fake deficit hawk routine every time a Democrat comes into power.
I'm an optimist by nature and in my heart I believe this country is so much better than what we've been in the clutches of these past 4 years. However, my nature to believe in the best of all Americans, this time, must be tamped down in favor of justice and strict adherence to the law and our Constitution to prosecute the bastards that invaded our Capitol and terrorized our elected officials. We need to prosecute their elected accomplices just as hard--or even harder.
In a way, sadly, we've indirectly condoned terror in lesser forms for many years now by not prosecuting lesser crimes and always hoping to inspire the best in others. Sadly, the orange anus proved over and over that hoping and wishing our better angels will prevail is useless, and that justice is quite flimsy in this country, and pretty hit or miss. Especially when a pResident can terrorize all the Rs in Congress by threatening to sic his flying green monkeys on them if they don't do his bidding.
When "others" have nothing but criminal or murderous intentions and have shown it clearly by their speech and actions, there is no opportunity for unity. This is game over. Democrats need to be tough as nails here as this is the bright red line that cannot be stepped over. Prosecutions and punishment and maximum sentences are the ONLY way back to unity and, I believe, the only thing the criminals on the other side of the aisle and invaders of our Capitol will understand and respect.
These violent seditionists already proved this to be true by their complete non-response on Inauguration Day. They are afraid of our power. Might does not always make right, but when Might is on the right side of Justice and the rule of law, we need to swing that hammer down hard and mean it.
We also need to vote and remain vigilant with that same hardcore intention and devotion.
Our country and our democracy deserve nothing less. Indeed it cannot survive without it.

Cheers to everyone here who helped make yesterday happen!! I am so proud of us all.. Salut!

(29,346 posts)I've been really grateful to have DU and DUers around to share all this history with. I've got to admit that on top of everything else on that dark night back in November 2016, losing DU and not having that resource to navigate those emotional waters made it considerably worse. It was so disorienting. Election night in 2004 was bad, but at least we had each other, lol.
But this last run to victory, like the 2008 and 2012, was all the sweeter for getting to share it with you all!
