This is my advise for President Obama for taking on whack job in the next debate

Casually accuse him of lying when he is, "Now you're lying again Mitt" and then school him on foreign policy since he is such and idiot. Talk to him like you are teaching him because he doesn't know. Because it's true, he doesn't know.

I bet that would make the guy blow a gasket.

Both Howard Fineman and Tweety said "That's not good." when the guest said it. (I don't know that guest's name.)

to openly confront others and i appreciate that he allows others to save face. these are qualities that i admire. but, at the same time, i think obama could adopt that teacher voice (you refer to) and gently correct romney's lies, for the benefit of the viewing audience.
he could suggest, for the sake of clarity, that romney recount his thought process as he changed his mind about supporting ryan's budget and the other policy reversals that were sprung on the nation last wednesday. he could remind romney that as the leader of the free world one must appear to be honest and above-board.
he could, he could, he could, but he won't.
and i know why.
because obama knows, for certain, that if he appears "uppity" he will lose votes.
the romney camp and the media whores have already used other epitaphs in describing obama's performance last week.
"he was lethargic", "he stood with eyes cast toward the ground", "he lies, just like the other boys" to site just a few.
yet, i am confident that obama has come up with a strategy to address romney's shape-shifting campaign and i hope its a flexible plan. what weapons does one use to ensnare shape-shifting enemies?
i'm equally confident that romney will again attempt to bamboozle the president, to catch him off guard. who knows what he'll say or do? he has no integrity. he plays by dirty rules.
anyway, i look forward to seeing the two again on wednesday. i expect that we will see a different show.

During the show, I too wanted to see the Prez kick that creep in the nuts, but after some time to simmer down, I'm more aware that lighting your hair on fire doesn't do anyone any good. Seems a good majority of people are thinking the same.

I didn't read him as "bragging" about common ground. I took that as a strategy to take the focus away from rMoney's hyperbolics and back towards common sense; aiming towards higher ideals in the face of corruption. Anyway, the real purpose of the debates is to present themselves to the populace, not perform on the WWF. He may have been tired, and he may have been astounded by the sheer brazenness, and he may have been affected by the altitude, and the Syria/Turkey situation, but in spite of all that, he still managed to rise above the provocations Stenchy threw at him. That's leadership, imo.

And, take it from me, when dealing with Psychopaths, Narcissists, Borderline and other pathological personalities, the best way to engage is to manage your angry reactions, think clearly, appeal to those who are sane, and proceed unswayed toward your goals. (Not that I, personally do it so well! I think PBO has a better handle on that than I do. )

i have been around pathological liars. it is very difficult to respond to people who deny saying what they just said, and then twist your words and use them against you.
what last week's debate revealed was that president obama is a man of grace and integrity and that mitt romney is a lying opportunist, who lacks empathy or respect for others.
it is a good thing for him that he is already as rich as croesus because he has let his business strategy out of the bag.
i think he has damaged brand romney and not done much of a favor to the mormon church either.

He was significantly ahead.

If he came across as angry, or as professorial and uppity, he would lose votes already in the bag.

And so (as I have heard a pundit say) the strategy was to be low key to hold onto the lead, which was enough to win the election.

That's logical, and practical.

BUT nobody knew that Mitt was going to disavow all prior statements and turn into a whirling dervish.

Obama could not have prepared for that surprise.
