Democrats to Rebuff McConnell's Filibuster Demands
https://politicalwire.com/2021/01/21/democrats-to-rebuff-mcconnells-filibuster-demands/
Democrats to Rebuff McConnell’s Filibuster Demands January 21, 2021 at 8:36 am EST By Taegan Goddard “Senate Democrats are signaling they will reject an effort by Mitch McConnell to protect the legislative filibuster as part of a deal to run a 50-50 Senate, saying they have little interest in bowing to his demands just hours into their new Senate majority,” Politico reports.
“McConnell has publicly and privately pressed Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to work to keep the 60-vote threshold on most legislation as part of their power-sharing agreement. Democrats have no plans to gut the filibuster further, but argue it would be a mistake to take one of their tools off the table just as they’re about to govern.” “Many Democrats argue that having the threat of targeting the filibuster will be key to forcing compromise with reluctant Republicans. They also believe it would show weakness to accede to McConnell’s demand as he’s relegated to minority leader.”

4. Back in the day, fillibusters were rare and shit got passed with bare majorities all the time...
Hell, much of the wrangling before the Civil War involved creating new states and keeping the "balance" between free and slave states. Then, the slave states tried to take their ball and go home. We all know how that turned out.
Requiring 60% to pass anything is not democratic at all. It is a way for the minority party to control things by shutting them down. This crap of a single Senator shutting down debate and of having 40% of them stopping everything has to end. |

5. No quarter for obstructionists determined to prevent us from saving democracy,
and repairing the widespread damage inflicted upon our people and our country by the Orange Seditionist and his Republican enablers.
They set in motion a process to deliberately weaken and ultimately destroy the United States, and the people spoke in order to stop them. Democrats must keep the naughty children in the Senate under control. Forever. |

7. McConnell, the self proclaimed grim reaper, is single handedly responsible for
making Congress the do nothing component of the US government.
McConnell blocked almost everything during the Obama administration. His blockades have made him one of the most destructive forces in government in the last ?? years. Hell, he may be worse than Trump in many respects. This is the DU member formerly known as TryLogic.

8. Why not reform the legislative filibuster?
We can reform the legislative filibuster so that 41 Senators would be required to sustain it, instead of requiring 60 to invoke cloture.
I'm of the "be careful what you wish for" school regarding elminating the filibuster. If a Democratic-controlled Senate gets rid of it and thus pushes through progressive legislation without repukes, an emboldened Republican majority can--and will--ram unpopular and harmful legislation without Dems being able to stop it. |

9. Filibuster is a flawed remnant of Jim Crow. It needs to go.
Or at least it needs major reform. It should be a 'weapon' of last resort to protect the right of the minority to have their voices heard, not a way to obstruct most legislation.
Not sure how this could be done exactly, but I'm sure the rules guru's can come up with something. |

12. The filibuster has outlived any usefulness.
It has become the rights favorite weapon to stop the Senate from doing any meaningful business. Without it, McConnell is reduced to a bystander to history. That suits me fine.

Moscow Mitch is a ruthless partisan power grabber who cares about one thing: amassing more power (to prevent the federal government from serving "The People" instead of the very wealthy).
