normal. Yes they are about normal. I look at the Arkansas dept of health flu stats and only 1 death from the flu for the entire season. The number of cases since the flu season started is BELOW the base line. The flu is here but so many people are wearing masks that it can not grab hold.
Here is the data : https://www.healthy.arkansas.gov/images/uploads/pdf/Weekly_Influenza_Report_Week_Ending_Saturday_January_16,_2021.pdf
EDIT: per popular demand, it seems that deaths are not normal for this year so far. I have tp appoligize for posting incorrect information. Must have been a Republican site.

(30,613 posts)For example, masks and handwashing are very effective against flu.
Reduced travel reduces highway fatalities and improves air quality (and lung health).
So we might actually see the total death count nearly neutral, but the causes shift.
On the downside, economic catastrophe causes a lot of deaths too.

(25,048 posts)Even though we've been isolating and social distancing and wearing masks and washing our hands and everything else, we still felt it was worth it to get our flu vaccines.

You'll see that the number of deaths has been abnormally high every single week since the last week of March 2020.
I don't know who said "the deaths are about normal", but whoever it was, it's a lie.

This is false.

(47,423 posts)There are misleading claims circulating that death are normal. They are not normal. 2020 deaths are much higher than normal.
"In mid-October, the CDC released analysis of death figures between Jan. 26 and Oct. 3, and revealed there had been an estimated 299,028 excess deaths in 2020 by this time ( here , datawrapper.dwcdn.net/LWq2f/6/ ). It said of this figure that 198,081 deaths (66%) were believed to be due to COVID-19 although the department also noted that underestimations could have been made on the total impact of the pandemic. A similar study from the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) looking at data between March and July also found US deaths had increased 20% during this period. COVID-19 was attributed to 67% of this excess (here)."

Let's stick to the facts.

(19,807 posts)compared to all the other years. The point I was trying to make is masks and prevention does in fact work. Probably not that much for car accidents, or heart attacks of being hit in the head with a fire extinguisher. But for things like the flu they do work.
It makes a person wonder if it might work next flu season?

(37,848 posts)You are correct in what YOU are saying. The articles were a little misleading in how they were written.
