The number of people overdue for their booster shots has fluctuated, with the number growing or shrinking somewhat depending on the day.More than 40,000 people in Florida have not gotten their second shots of a coronavirus vaccine within the recommended time frame to do so, raising questions about why that may be happening.
Both of the coronavirus vaccines approved for use in the United States require two doses per person to be fully effective, with Pfizer-BioNTech recommending a second dose after three weeks and Moderna vaccine doses scheduled four weeks apart, although experts say its not critical that second doses be administered in exactly those time frames.
More than 1 million people in Florida have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, according to state data from Tuesday. Of those, about 100,000 came back for their second shots and another 44,000 were listed in state data as overdue for second doses.
On Wednesday, the state published its latest vaccine data but omitted the number of people overdue for second doses. When asked why that detail was no longer included, Florida Department of Health spokesman Jason Mahon said the state removed it to better align with data reporting from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and to avoid confusion because people can still get second doses after the recommended time frame.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announcement this month that the state is partnering with Publix Supermarkets to establish COVID-19 vaccination sites across the state follows the grocer donating $100,000 to the governors political committee.
The partnership announcement between the state and supermarket chain comes a month after Publix made four $25,000 donations to Friends of Ron DeSantis.
Prior to the $100,000 in contributions made in December 2020, Publix had donated $50,000 to the governors political committee, the most recent of which was $25,000 given in January of 2020.
In an email to WJCT News, Publix Director of Communications Maria Brous said any inference of a connection between those contributions and the grocers partnership with the state on COVID-19 vaccinations is absolutely incorrect.

This donation should be investigated.

(34,139 posts)She doesn't like Publix at all and won't shop there unless she has to. Unfortunately, Publix is pretty much the only choice we have without driving a lot farther.

(34,139 posts)And it's already a twenty mile round trip to the closest store - unless you want to count the little country store down the road that is on the National Register of Historic Places and carries nearly the same stock as it did when they opened almost a hundred years ago.
What Publix does have going for it is that it is mostly employee owned. Donations come out of PACs that are supported by those employees, though, so they do reflect the employees' leanings. I'm of two minds - I like the stores but I hate the overall politics. Up here the employees tend less Republican and more Democratic, mirroring the population in this area.
Publix started in Winter Haven, Florida, not far from the town where I grew up. The area has been very red, but is starting to shade a little purple. When I was about six, they opened a Publix in our town and Mom almost immediately started doing most of her shopping there. Because they could source their produce and a lot of their meats locally, they have always had good pricing and they are more diligent about keeping the stores clean.

(25,606 posts)Obviously you need the second dose for immunity, but if you receive the second dose after the due date, it does not impact the effectiveness of the vaccine.
This may have occurred because of the vaccine shortage, but if the second dose is received later, it won't effect the outcome. Mine is due on Feb 10th, but if there is a shortage, it will probably administered at a later date and will still be effective.

(22,176 posts)incompetence stinks to high heaven ... one of the most important things besides getting vaccines developed is distribution of it. And an earlier post on DU today said that basically, there wasn't a delivery plan...or if there was, basically worthless. The incompetence of everyone associated for the most part w/ the trump administration is mind boggling.

Think they are doing friends of friends and not the elderly and at risk because my sister is both. This really pisses me off!!!!!!!!!!!!!
