If racist leave the Republican Party they are then back to Goldwater Repubs

Last edited Thu Jan 21, 2021, 04:21 PM - Edit history (1)

In 1964, after the crushing defeat of Goldwater, Republicans actively embraced the yellow dog racists Democrats who abandoned the Democratic Party over the voting rights and civil rights acts. The Party of Lincoln was now the Party of bubba. Without Bubba, no Republican President would have been elected in the last 60 years. They thought they could control them but at long last these vile people turned on their "masters" and took over the Grand Ole Party. Now they are threatening to form a new Party setting the Republicans back to the mid 60's. Ironic isn't. The Party of Lincoln betrayed by the South.

I'd say that is a bit of sabre rattling, especially as he has the RNC in his pocket.

He never became a liberal; he just developed some political pragmatism.

In response to the now quaint objection to gays serving in the military, the once-stalwart conservative said "You don't have to be straight; you just have to shoot straight."

And speaking of shooting, his response to civilians wanting military-style weaponry was to tell them to join the service.

So...not bad, all things considered...

he was popular for his opposition to Ike being too 'moderate', 'states rights', opposition to 1964 Civil Rights act, and the New Deal.
Reagan's 'fiery' speeches in support of Goldwater's prez candidacy, - made the more overt racism of nixon and reaganites more mainstream.
