Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is proposing that the Senate give former President Donald Trump's legal team two weeks to prepare for the upcoming impeachment trial and delay its start until February, the Republican leader told his conference on a call Thursday, according to multiple GOP senators.
McConnell's proposal throws the timing of the trial further into doubt, though it remains to be seen if Democrats go along. House Democrats could still send the article over to the Senate and start the trial the next day.
Asked if he had heard a response from Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, McConnell told CNN Wednesday, "Not yet but we continue to talk about it."
McConnell told Republicans he's in no rush to begin the trial. The Republican leader's point was the House moved quickly on impeachment but the Senate needs time to prepare for a full trial. News of McConnell's proposal was first reported by Politico.

(19,356 posts)in two weeks much more information pointing to Trump's role in the entire insurrection will come to light.
Therefore McConnell might be hoping that the Senate can convict the orange spud and deny him the possibility of running again.
McConnell knows another Trump run would be disastrous for the Republican Party and a Trump win would be disastrous for the nation.
He wants NONE of it!

(31,261 posts)Investigators have discovered that there was some coordinated action at the Capitol riot. McConnell gets daily, privileged briefings, maybe he is hearing that Trump in potential tied into the riot, more than just inciting it. I noticed a picture yesterday that I found strange, when President Biden was signing a stack of Executive Orders rescinding a lot of Trumps actions, Kevin McCarthy, a major Trump butt-kisser was standing obediently in the background watching. McCarthy also gets the briefings that McConnell gets.

(90,301 posts)... he wants to act like he had nothing to do with it and shove the devil in the garbage.
Pelosi and Schumer are doing Moscow Mitch a favor if they wait weeks to get evidence but right now S&P win if they can get it on record the number of kGOP senators who vote for Red Don's treason.
If Red Don can run in 2024 he will syphon all the energy from the kGOP and force the rest of the DC kkkons to distance themselves from him.

Former President Donald Trump has hired a lawyer, South Carolina attorney Butch Bowers, to defend him at his Senate impeachment trial, which could start as early as next week.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a Trump loyalist, told fellow GOP senators on Thursday that Bowers had agreed to represent Trump in the case, where the former president is accused of inciting the deadly Jan. 6 riot at the U.S Capitol, according to the D.C. newsletter Punchbowl.
The New York Times soon after confirmed that report, and noted that Trumps other lawyers had all bowed out of representing him in what will be his second impeachment trial.

(24,287 posts)These are pretty damn serious charges and I think any POTUS deserves adequate time and legal counsel to prepare a proper defense. As skipfox points out, more time for Trump also gives the Senate more time to accrue evidence.
