Prosecutors allege Thomas Caldwell helped organize a group of at least eight people who were at the Capitol during the Jan. 6 riots.
Link: https://www.thedailybeast.com/thomas-edward-caldwell-oath-keeper-leader-charged-with-conspiracy-in-capitol-riots
(snip)
Thomas Edward Caldwell, 65, was arrested in Virginia on several federal charges, including conspiracy to commit an offense against the United States, after he was allegedly involved in coordinating a plan to disrupt the Jan. 6 congressional session to certify President-elect Joe Bidens electoral victory. During the siege, in which thousands of MAGA supporters stormed the Capitol, five people died and dozens more were injured.
According to a criminal complaint first obtained by The Washington Post, prosecutors allege Caldwell helped organize a group of at least eight people, who were seen aggressively approaching an entrance to the Capitol. The group was seen wearing military-style gear and helmets as they moved in an organized and practiced fashion and force[d] their way to the ground of the crowd gathered around a door to the U.S. Capitol.

(25,908 posts)doesn't it? Unless the word gas has some other meaning to them. But then the question is, Why didn't they do it, whatever "it" was?
Also, weren't there some rioters who had gas masks? Perhaps the rioters with gas masks anticipated cops using tear gas on them.
In fact, maybe the gas that the message referred to was tear gas. It could do some serious damage in a sealed, enclosed area. So maybe the rioters had tear gas with them. I thought I heard a report on that, but I'm not sure. But what would be the purpose of tear gassing Congress? To make it impossible for them to reconvene within a reasonable time?

(69,659 posts)Fri Jan 22, 2021: Insurrectionist suspect from Clarke County active in local Republican politics
By Evan Goodenow, The Winchester Star Jan 20, 2021 Updated 18 hrs ago

A sign by a barn outside the Wadesville Road home of insurrection suspect and alleged Oath Keeper Thomas Edward Caldwell on Tuesday. The Clarke County resident was arrested and charged with violently entering the U.S, Capitol on Jan. 6 along with members of the far-right extremist group.
Evan Goodenow/The Winchester Star
Insurrectionist suspect and alleged far-right militia member Thomas Edward Caldwell is active in Clarke County Republican politics. ... Caldwell and his wife Sharon are constituents of Del. Dave LaRock, R-Hamilton, who said on Tuesday that he has known them since he took office in 2014.
"Tom is a wonderful man. He and Sharon have been very supportive of me," said LaRock, who represents Virginia's 33rd District, which includes parts of Clarke, Frederick and Loudoun counties. "Tom has served our country in a long and distinguished career in the U.S. military. I think very highly of Tom and Sharon."
LaRock said he was "shocked" and "amazed" to learn that Caldwell, who the delegate said is active in his local church, had been arrested and charged with serious crimes related to the storming of the Capitol.
LaRock said he was at the Jan. 6 rally in which President Trump urged supporters to "fight like hell" to overturn President-elect Joe Biden's victory. He said he didn't see the Caldwells in the crowd, but noted there were thousands of people there.
{snip}
No one answered the door at the Caldwell home on Tuesday afternoon, but a sign by a barn said Trump Country.

I am interested in the detailed instructions to find the Members: Do like we had to do when I was in the core start tearing oit florrs go from top to bottom; and Go through back house chamber doors facing N left down hallway down steps. So we know the traitorous s.o.b. who sent it was probably a Marine vet (one who cant spell, referencing the Corps as the core). But how did he or she know the specific directions to give traitor Caldwell?
The plot of this deranged movie is heating up. If these were muslims or Blacks, most of the terrorists would have been shot dead by now and the remaining would be on their way to Guantanamo as enemy combatants. Since they are all "White Spridiots", theyll all get fair and long winded trials which will keep the media focused away from the 500,000+(and climbing) covid19 deaths. But ultimately, I think, most of those arrested will go to jail for extended periods of time. Im hoping 10-20, but have a feeling it will be for less than that.
Again, I stress that if the terrorists had been muslim or Black, the leadership and many second, even third level participants would be carted off to Guantanamo as enemy combatants, meaning that theyd never go to trial because theyd be dragged in front of a military tribunal. I have no proof of this, it just seems that thats how it would have worked out.

(17,168 posts)I don't think I want to read stuff like this anymore. It makes me more prone to being accepting of privacy violations and as an unarmed, essentially sane/non-violent person, I don't like fears which play on one's mind/ make me more open to the harvesting of data from someone like me. I think actual bad actors will use this as an excuse to ram more surveillance into our already surveillance heavy society. It is bad in multiple ways.
It is good of course that places like the Capitol have all the security, monitoring and surveillance essential for actual threats like these.

(833 posts)Is identifying a FB poster the same thing as harvesting data? If the poster's intent was criminal, it seems to me that a federal warrant requiring FB to cough up a name or names is (um) warranted. I've come to think of "harvesting data" as gathering information about users and selling it to advertisers, etc. In other words, FB's business model. That's different from the platform being used to commit a felony and then being compelled to identify the felonious poster. If I'm wrong about any of this, somebody please correct me. Anyway, that's why I quit FB long ago.

That's different from the platform being used to commit a felony and then being compelled to identify the felonious poster. If I'm wrong about any of this, somebody please correct me. Anyway, that's why I quit FB long ago. That is quite correct. But my point was that these actual lunatics would make a case for expanded surveillance. It is clear that legitimate national security related reasons exist for such surveillance. However, it is possible that irresponsible/sleazy industries that are already harvesting data from normal people, eschewing permission altogether, will be emboldened. Now they can say "Hey we are not just selling tacky ads. We are advancing community safety." And I just don't buy it with companies like FB and Google. I am reading this book called Surveillance Capitalism so that theme is running in my head..Aggressive expansion into people's private spaces using bullshit rationales.
Edit: Is identifying a FB poster the same thing as harvesting data? If the poster's intent was criminal, it seems to me that a federal warrant requiring FB to cough up a name or names is (um) warranted.
Oh no-I did not mean that sort of thing. That is not data harvesting. As you point out, if anyone posts sedition plots or threats of physical violence on the net, they should pretty much expect to get on the radar of law enforcement. But I was referring to the aggressive data collection/tracking practices inflicted on random people merely going about their lives. I worry that FB, Google and
other annoying surveillance capitalist firms will expand their powers using this sort of thing.
Oldem
(833 posts)Our definitions are clear, as are the subjects at issue. Good job!
Btw you mentioned having given FB the boot, so these issues appear to be of interest to you. I do recommend Shoshana Zuboff's "The Age of Surveillance Capitalism@" to you/anyone who is not a paranoid luddite but is legitimately vaguely confused about how it is that these large companies are pushing so much stuff through with relatively little oversight, permission etc. I am only a few chapters in, but it is an eye-opening read.
And she distinguishes this noxious variant from routine capitalism. Routine capitalism is hard enough on the environment, non-human life and often people.
But this variant is its own sort of parasitic beast.
I looked her up and she is not a lawyer as I had first assumed on reading it. She is a social psychologist. She lays it out pretty well.
She points out how there was no inevitability here. The technology and the goals (which often are hard to quibble with when isolated out-I can think of a few where it is hard to argue with tech that advances convenience or safety-e.g.:medical data, driver's safety, safety from violent crime etc.) are in no way tied to the specific creepy form in which some subset of rather creepy and opportunistic people have had them realized.
I will probably post a link to the book and write up some of the key portions in my own words later in "Non-fiction".
It is dense with ideas which I think should be disseminated more widely, questioning the legal and ethical aspects of a lot of SC.
(@: I have been referring to this book on these forums for a couple of weeks and abridging the title to "Surveillance Capitalism". 300 pages in, I noticed that it is actually what it says now.)
